We are sending a clear message of integrity and justice, louder than the slander our oppressors can push into the news.

We are almost there.
In less than thirty days I will be drafting an unprecedented announcement that your resilience made possible: the announcement that Silk Road has repaid all victims of our February hack.
As of today, May 27th 2014, 82.09% of all victims of the Feburary hack have been fully repaid.
In June the world will be reminded that when faced with adversity, Silk Road's community doesn't run. We unite.
Our enemies may seize our servers, impound our coins, and arrest our friends, but they cannot stop you: our people.
You write history with every coin transacted here.
It is unprecedented for any entity, darknet or clearnet, to completely repay the victims of a Bitcoin hack.
We are sending a clear message of integrity and justice, louder than the slander our oppressors can push into the news. History will prove that we are not criminals, we are revolutionaries.
We are slaving to transform a notoriously-violent industry into a safe online marketplace, removing the risk of face-to-face transactions.
We do not steal the People's money like Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, and Morgan Stanley. We bail each other out with our own sweat. We are not puppets of fear or greed. We do not run like the cowards at MtGox, TorMarket, or Sheep. Silk Road is not here to scam, we are here to end economic oppression. Silk Road is not here to promote violence, we are here to end the unjust War on Drugs. Silk Road is not here to submit to authority, we are here to defend a foundational human right: freedom of choice. Silk Road is not a marketplace, Silk Road is a global revolt.
When the news hits that everyone has been repaid, do your part to help tear down the world's misimpressions about what our movement stands for.
Four months of everyone's hard work has almost generated one spark. Throw it into the petrol. Be prepared with your throwaway accounts. Tweet. Upvote. Blog. Email editors.
It is an honor to serve you. Defcon

r/MAINSTREETCRYPTO EXCLUSIVE: INTERVIEW WITH ROGER VER

MAINSTREETCRYPTO EXCLUSIVE: INTERVIEW WITH ROGER VER
MAINSTREETCRYPTO EXCLUSIVE: INTERVIEW WITH ROGER VER

Roger Ver, is one of the five founders of the bitcoin foundation. You could say he was ahead of his time, buying $25,000 worth of bitcoin when they were merely $1 each. He was the first major investor to invest millions in Blockchain.info, Ripple, Kraken, and Bitpay among others. Now he wants Bitcoin Cash, a fork of the legacy chain, to be used as a global P2P currency, and says it can scale just like Satoshi first laid out in the original Bitcoin whitepaper. -------------------------------------------------------------- Bitcoincash.org Rank: #5 Current Price: $257.65 Market Cap : $4,741,042,759 24 hour trading volume : 1.741 Billion USD -------------------------------------------------------------- Hi Roger, first and foremost, I wanted to thank you for taking the time to do this. You are truly a pioneer in the Bitcoin space, and all of us owe you a debt of gratitude. On behalf of all of us, I wanted to say thank you for advancing the space.
1. First, I want you to take a moment and appreciate how far bitcoin and cryptocurrency has come this past decade. Did you ever believe you would see such growth, interest, and adoption in such a short period of time or has it completely surprised you?
We always over estimate the amount of progress that will be made in the short term, but underestimate the amount of progress that will be made in the long term.
Crypto currency is another example of that.
2. At what point did it hit you that bitcoin was history in the making?
From the very first day I knew it was one of the most important inventions in the history of humankind.
The book Digital Gold goes over how I literally had to go to the emergency room because of the excitement I had for Bitcoin.
3. How did you first get into bitcoin, pre Bitinstant?
I first heard about it on the FreeTalkLive.com radio show.
A full history of the early years is covered well by Digital Gold.
4 .What economists and philosophers do you align with?
I think Murray Rothbard fits into both categories and his thinking influenced mine more than any other single author.
Others who have influenced me would include:
Adam Smith
Ludwig von Mises
Milton Friedman
David Friedman
John Locke
Henry Hazlitt
Frederick Bastiat
Larked Rose
Ray Kurzweil
6. What has been your favorite moment in crypto history thus far?
My favorite moments were reading the underlying philosophy behind the Silk Road.
The government has done an amazing job distorting and smearing the underlying message behind the site.
My eyes started to tear up when I read this post on the front page of the Silk Road for the fist time:
https://www.reddit.com/Anarcho_Capitalism/comments/29diyt/defcons_latest_post_on_silk_road/?sort=top
I never bought or sold a single thing there, but I spent countless enjoyable hours reading their forums and exploring the site.
7. What are your future plans for Bitcoin Cash?
It isn’t just a hobby, it’s a global revolt. We will become money for the world.
8. Branding is so important. Bitcoin currently has greater brand recognition a la Coca-Cola, and is regarded by many as the “real” Bitcoin, even though this is widely disputed, especially by crypto-fundamentalists. Do you envision a Coca-Cola vs. Pepsi type scenario? Do you envision parity price-wise between the two on a long enough timeline?
Bitcoin Cash has more utility than BTC, so in the long run it will have a larger market cap. Currently we are in the era when Myspace was bigger than Facebook, but Myspace’s servers were being over loaded and causing a bad user experience.
Eventually people migrated to Facebook and eventually people will migrate away from BTC.
8. a) Have you ever thought of re-branding Bitcoin Cash?
No one is in control to do such a thing by themselves. The community can’t even agree on orange vs green for the colors.
9. Bitcoin Cash has the potential to truly be used as a global form of payment rather than merely a store of value, what else excites you the most about the potential of Bitcoin Cash?
  1. Fast
  2. Cheap
  3. Reliable
  4. Private
Payments for the world. That’s all we need.
10. I asked Adam Back the same question: If you could remove yourself from the equation, and remove bias, how would you objectively evaluate the pros and cons of Bitcoin Cash versus The Lightning Network?
Anyone can permissionlessly start using BCH to start sending or receiving payments world wide in about 30 seconds. (The time it takes to download an app)
It is accepted by more than 100,000 websites around the world, and has millions of users.
Lightning Network would take about a full day to setup and get working permissionlessly, and would take several hundred dollars of additional computer hardware.
Once it is setup, you can spend it at about 300 websites world wide, and it has maybe a few tens of thousands of users.
11. When you’re not working, what do you like to do for fun? Favorite hobbies?
I enjoy reading, and Brazilian Jujitsu. I’m especially interested in doing more competitions before I get too old.
12. What are a few of your favorite books? What are some that have made a long lasting impact on you? (Can be fiction or nonfiction)
I loved the Age of Spiritual Machines. It painted a picture of how exciting the world is going to be thanks to More’s Law.
I also loved The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. I see crypto currency being a world life parallel.
13. What are you most excited about for the future of blockchain technology and where do you see the space in 5 years?
I’m excited to see wide spread wallets with strong privacy, and more agorism starting to take place around the world.
14. What are your personal theories of who Satoshi was / were, what was their motivation, and do you think something like bitcoin would have inevitably been created eventually, had Satoshi never existed?
I don’t know who Satoshi is or was, but it was clear they were trying to build a peer to peer electronic cash system, not what BTC has become today.
It was an inevitability that someone would create something like Bitcoin eventually. People like David Friedman and others had been writing about it for decades in advance.
15. What advice would you give our viewers regarding blockchain, business, motivation, or life in general?
Read more books. Reading a book like having a one on one tutoring session from the author. It’s the best way to learn directly from the greatest minds the human race has ever produced.
BONUS:
If you were a director and could make only one film out of all the wild stories regarding crypto, what subject matter would you choose and why?
The Silk Road because it embodied the spirit of peer to peer cash and voluntaryism.

Mint Mobile - Customer Account Security Issues

Decided to re-post this from one of the other threads I commented on ...
As a security professional here is a free security evaluation from customer's perspective. I decided to spend a bit of time looking at using your mobile services, here is what I found:
-After I setup a temporary password through your phone app to activate a SIM card, I reset the password on your website and did not get a confirmation email that I did so. Nor was I asked to enter my current password prior to changing to new password.
-PIN is tied to last 4 digits of your phone # at all times, could not set my own PIN in your App or Online or over the phone with Customer Service. I was also told that in order to change my 4 digit PIN I need to change my phone number.
-There are no security questions.
-There is absolutely no alerting in place. Someone can take over your cellphone number and you wouldn't even know.
-There is no 2 factor authentication (not even SMS based), you can forget about services such as Google Authenticator.
-I called customer service to obtain the account # and pin #. Absolutely 0 protection in place. Asking someone what plan they are on is a joke. Customer service response was we ask a lot of questions, after she just handed over a PIN and account number to me and asked only 3 (name, email and what plan I'm on). TIP: At least ask the customer for their activation code, when initially setting account up before handing over account number.
-A lot of times what moves companies is profits. So Mint folks responsible for security please get this straight. If you fix your customer security you will get WAY more business and endorsements, especially from a security community. Otherwise they might start doing talks and presentations on how easy it is to hijack cellphone numbers from your company. No one wants to be a topic of discussion at Blackhat and Defcon.
It shouldn't be that hard to be able to set a custom PIN from your app. Don't you care about your customer's security?
As a potential customer I would like to see a response from Mint on what they are doing to address these issues and more importantly how quickly you are willing to address them?
As a point of reference for anyone who is not familiar why not having the above security practices in place, you can read about it here:https://markets.businessinsider.com/currencies/news/bitcoin-investor-loses-24-million-of-crypto-sim-swap-hackers-2019-11-1028677818

Monero Meetup Utrecht #5: How to protect your privacy when using cryptocurrencies

Monero Meetup Utrecht #5: How to protect your privacy when using cryptocurrencies
Hello magic mystery money friends!
The next Monero Meetup in Utrecht will be on Tuesday the 10th, and it's a special one!
I'm happy to report I found a speaker who knows what he's talking about and will give an actual presentation with slides. He's a regular visitor, a shadowy hacker, a Linux and Tor expert, and you may know him as defterade.
We're also moving to a new location in the city center. Lisk Center Utrecht are our new hosts. Among other things, it's a co-working center for blockchain professionals. It's on the 6th floor of the Beatrix Theater building. Address: Jaarbeursplein 6, but the entrance is on Croeselaan. On the 6th floor, please click the buzzer for Lisk at the door for De Buren.
We're also changing the language from Dutch to English, but feel free to ask questions or make comments in Dutch. Last time, I forgot to mention here that my presentation was supposed to be in Dutch. After an Anglophone expat joined us, I talked in English, but others felt more comfortable responding in Dutch. Mixing both languages spontaneously went pretty well.

Lisk Center Utrecht

Program

19:00 Welcome and drinks. The first round of drinks is provided for free by Cake Wallet, the Monero app for iOS.
19:15 Edwin den Boer tells what Monero developers and the community have been doing in the past two months. Notable developments so far: audits of the new mining algorithm RandomX, the Monero Village at Defcon and the Monero Torch on Twitter. A network upgrade is being prepared for October.
19:30 Defterade gives a presentation that briefly introduces the Monero project, followed by an in depth look at privacy in cryptocurrencies. He will discuss Bitcoin's lack of privacy and how this has had real world impact. He will then discuss the the past, the present and the possible future of Monero's privacy technology and will give general recommendations to keep yourself safe when using Monero.
20:00 Break.
20:15 Second part of Defterade's presentation.
20:45 Drinks and more discussion. Meanwhile, try to solve a Monero puzzle with a 0.1 XMR prize - sponsored by Cake Wallet again.
I think we're supposed to leave around 21:30. We can stay as long as we like, let's say to 22:00. After the meetup, please leave the building through the side entrance on the south side, walking along the reception desk. There are restaurants across the road where you could have another drink.

Beatrix Theater, next to Utrecht Central Station
Don't forget to RSVP, like, retweet or share a link to help us promote the meetup on those awful centralized websites:

35C3: rehrar report

What up, scrubs? For those who didn't know, I was funded by the community to go to 35C3. Those who thought it was a good value, donated for me to go, those who didn't didn't. As is the FFS way.
But because I did get funded and because I did go, I'm doing a report to say how things went from my perspective. Other key players may do their own report, so keep an eye out for those.
I arrived on the 26th, and Riat had already done 92.367% of the setup for our cluster. I helped with whatever I could, chatted and met with the other volunteers, and went out to eat with Dimi from Monerujo and Jeremy Rand from NameCoin. More on these guys soon.
For those of you who haven't been to C3 before, there's nothing quite like it. It's something you have to experience. It can't really be described. The aesthetic is overwhelming, and the beautiful blend of artistry and technology really makes the conference unique and stand apart from anything else. I was able to walk around for a bit with parasew on that first day as well, and we looked at the surface of what C3 had to offer.
The real work started the next day. Our cluster was the "Critical Decentralization Cluster" and had several different assemblies as part of it:
The cluster was set up in such a way to give each of these assemblies their own space, where they can talk and run their own stuff. Monero, of course, took center stage.
To the internal crowd (those running the cluster) the most noticable portions of my work were taking many duties off of parasew's shoulders in terms of running the cluster. He and his comrades had been working for long days prior to my arrival, so by the time C3 had arrived, they were quite tired. I did what I could (scheduling, MCing, and solving other unexpected problems as they come up) to make sure they weren't stressed out of their minds.
To people not a part of the cluster, the most visible portion of my work was definitely being the master of ceremonies for the stage. We had talks and workshops running concurrently during the majority of opening hours (you can view our schedule here), and I was there to both introduce the speakers, graciously hint when they were going overtime, and stall for the AV team when they needed some time to make adjustments.
Things that are most applicable to the Monero community that I did include:
I got to spend good time and have quality discussions with many people in the Monero community that are Europe-based. For the sake of their privacy I will not reveal all of them (they can do so in the comments if they'd like), but among them were: m2049r from Monerujo, parasew, Michael from hardware, dsc, and binaryFate (he's always a good time).
One of the unexpected highlights of the conference was getting to talk with Jeremy Rand from NameCoin (one of the other few legitimate uses of blockchain besides decentralized money. Satoshi thought so, and worked a bit on BitDNS, the precursor to namecoin). If you haven't yet checked out that project, I encourage you to do so. Our projects both hold healthy respect for each other. He was very smart, and we had some great discussions about further future collaboration.
I got sick the last day (I think somebody was spreading it around, cuz a few other people felt under the weather that same day), and even today I have an annoying residual cough, but I still did my best to give 110% (down from 125%).
In all, it was a great experience, and I think a great success for Monero. Because C3 is very anti-commercial, Monero and Bitcoin were the only two cryptocurrencies to have a meaningful presence (just like Defcon), and I think this was very optically important. Everyone got to see that Monero is still not just alive, but going strong as other projects drop like flies around us. It shows that Monero is still just as ideologically driven as ever, and, to my understanding, the C3 organizers were very happy with us and the content we provided, and want us back next year.
Thanks to everyone who donated for me to go. I hope you have a happy new year.

Breaking Bitcoin Hardware Wallets in the next DEFCON 25

;::::::::::::::::EDIT: 26/10/2017 .::::::::::::::::::: now we can see the presentation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hAtoRrxFBWs :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::..........
seeing the list of speaker of the next DEF CON 25 (July 27-30, 2017 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas!) list of speakers I find a very interesting presentation named:
BREAKING bitcoin hardware wallets
this is the intro: "The security of your bitcoins rests entirely in the security of your private key. Bitcoin hardware wallets help protect against software-based attacks to recover or misuse your key. However, hardware attacks on these wallets are not as well studied. In 2015, Jochen Hoenicke was able to extract the private key from a TREZOR using a simple power analysis technique. While that vulnerability was patched, he suggested the Microcontroller on the TREZOR, which is also the same on the KeepKey, may be vulnerable to additional side channel attacks.
In this presentation we will quickly overview fault injection techniques, timing, and power analysis methods using the Open Source Hardware tool, the ChipWhisperer. We then show how to apply these techniques to the STM32F205 which is the MCU on the Trezor and KeepKey. Lastly, we will present our findings of a timing attack vulnerability and conclude with software and hardware recommendations to improve bitcoin hardware wallets. We will show and share our tools and methods to help you get started in breaking your own wallet! Josh Datko Principal Engineer, Cryptotronix LLC Chris Quartier Embedded Engineer, Cryptotronix, LLC"
so in a month, we can see this interest presentation. in general, u can find all the videos on the official channel youtube or in the official web
keep update!

Applying for Cryptocurrency - /u/neuralzen - background in infosec, photography, and foobar[42] - I'm out in the world learning and traveling, but I'm here everyday.

How much account age and comment karma do you have?
11 years, and 13065.
What are your credentials? Do you have any skills with AutoModerator rules, CSS, or programming bots? Can you reference external profiles or mod positions on other subs?
I don't have experience with those tools, and have only dabbled with CSS but I do have experience programming and know how to learn. My background is in network and information security and I bought my first bitcoin at DefCon for about $100.
Do you moderate a large number of subreddits? If so, will this be a burden to your mod duties?
I (technically) moderate only one other sub, which I created as a joke (bowl_of_petunias) and it gets no traffic so it shouldn't impact my duties. I also attend to some community admin duties for the Jibrel telegram, but that is mostly just spam clean up and dealing with beligerant/hateful users.
What project in the crypto space are you a fan of or invested in?
I'm a big fan of MakerDAO, and certainly Ethereum. I'm also the proud owner of several cryptopunks.
What is your timezone? How active do you intend to be?
My timezone is GMT+7 mostly, sometimes plus or minus an hour depending. I can be pretty active and attentive, I'm already checking cryptocurrency every day, several times a day anyways.
Do you have a vision or goal? If so, what is it and how would you pursue it?
From a broad perspective my goal is to help adoption flourish, and help people get accurate information on the ebb and flow of this evolving space. If I can contribute to helping this be a positive and encouraging community, then I'm on track. Personally I'm also learning Solidity and wish to become proficient in smart contract security auditing (I've completed all but the last 2 capturetheether challenges).
Can you find anyone who will vouch for you in the comment section of your post?
Sure, but they may not all be active members of cryptocurrency.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
I'm generally a patient person and not one to be overzealous with the ban hammer, but I will follow community guidelines as directed by my more experienced peers to keep things clean, welcoming, and helpful for everyone who visits our sub.
Thanks for having a look!

XMR Puzzle for DefCon 2018 BCOS Village

I am part of the group attending DefCon 2018 and representing Monero at the BCOS Village.
As part of planned 'entertainment and education' we have decided to have a contests and challenges "sub-committee" who in turn have decided to offer prizes for completion of certain pre-devised challenges and puzzles. These range from simple demonstration of Monero transfers, mining a testnet block, setting up the GUI, programming a NFC, etc.
We are also thinking of creating a Monero specific/themed 'crypto puzzle' for the conference (20,000 hackers in attendence).
There have been some links shared on the Taiga, and i thought i would share them here, as well as canvas for anybody that may want to get involved in actually devising, imagining and/or creating a puzzle.
We could just go to one of the crypto puzzle artists and ask them to contribute, but i figured we, as a community, are imaginative enough to be able to devise something ourselves.
I have a few ideas myself (they are probably shite), but am sure there are others out there that would be interested in getting involved, and would have certain skills to offer (whether its maths, graphic design, art, etc etc).
I am open to any and all ideas on this and i reckon its a nice avenue for getting involved with Monero if you hadn't already, and also a nice avenue for thinking outside of the box in a creative and artistic way, while helping a community that you are part of.
feel free to post ideas here on this thread (obviously if its a good one it's better to PM me, because otherwise you are telling everyone your idea and this may lead to the puzzle getting solved a fair bit quicker).
Ideally, it would be nice to get three puzzles going, an easy (1-5 hours solve time), medium (12-24 hours solve time), and hard (20 days solve time).

All Bitcoin address with balances are sorted and listed, can someone help to check the math?

A few years after the DEFCON talk of brain wallet, I still couldn't find a whole list of Bitcoin address with balance on the web, so I decide to put up one and update it weekly. I appreciate if someone can check and point out the math mistakes on site, thanks.

Monero at the 34C3 - share your ideas and help to make it happen

Hello Monero Community!
Let's bring Monero to the 34C3! The congress features a variety of lectures and workshops on technical and political issues related to Security, Cryptography, Privacy and online Freedom of Speech. It's considered one of the lagest events of this kind, alongside the DEFCON.
The event will happen December 27th to 30th, 2017 in Leipzig, Germany.
A big thanks goes to u/parasew and u/nevvton from RIAT the Research Institute for Future Cryptoeconomics Vienna, they cared a lot about communication with the CCC. We now oficially have a shared assembly with Bitcoin, RIAT and Monero (links to the assembly wiki).
For the assembly during the 34C3 we'll have a space with ~50m² which we share with Bitcoin/RIAT.
We plan to have small events/talks and presentations/workshops about this topics:
The help of the monero community is needed to present Monero properly.
What ideas do you have? How can we attract and involve interested visitors in monero/cryptocurrencies/privacy? How can we show how monero works in a beautiful and beginner-friendly way?
Who will be at the 34C3 and has some spare time to hang around at the assembly to talk with visitors and answer questions? What kind of introductory talks/demos could me make?
Who can design some nice posters/flyers about monero? How does it work technically? (RingCT, stealth adresses, ...) Who is involved in monero? (decentralized community, core-devs, MRL, FFS, ...) What awesome projects are made by the community members? (HW-wallet, Kovri, Monerujo, Kasisto...)
A lot of questions and a lot of work... Let's brainstorm, collect ideas, discuss and then play it out! PM me, post your ideas here or join us on IRC #monero-ccc. I'm happy about everyone who could support us, unfortunately my time is often limited.
I'll try to manage the input on the Monero-Taiga join us there if you want to help. I can also print stuff (posters, flyers, stickers) made by the community and bring it to the congress.

Anyone wanted to buy a Casascius Bitcoin but was afraid to?

so i've been wanting one of these for a while and the thing holding me back is that it is known that the hologram can be removed and reapplied with the average person not being able to tell it was tampered with. Does this idea bother anyone else? A malicious seller could sell a fully "loaded" coin and have done what these hackers did. You check the casascius checker sites and it's unredeemed but unknowingly the seller already has the private key waiting to sweep it after you pay a premium
