TIFU by calling DraftKings a "fantasy sports betting site"
Former lurker here, but had to share this. This happened a couple months ago. I was working as a recruiter for technical jobs (software developers, system admins and the like) and one of our clients was the now-ubiquitous DraftKings. I was pumped to be recruiting for them because it's an easy sell to potential candidates, and the company offices are pretty cool. Very impressed with the fact that they had an event scheduled for the most recent Rhonda Rousey fight, I tweeted something to the effect of "DraftKings, a fantasy sports betting site, even has games for MMA fights! Contact me for employment details". This turned out to be a colossal fuckup. Apparently, DK has a team that monitors any mention of its name across the entire internet. The account manager at my company gets an angry call from DK's head of HR or something, saying that DK is NOT a fantasy sports betting website and that they will cancel a potentially $.5M contract with my firm if something isn't done about this. Of course I deleted the tweet, but that didn't matter. Tweeted at 11am on a Friday, fired at 2pm. DK is facing litigation in several states and intense scrutiny from federal regulators regarding its practices, but I'm the one that loses his job. I guess they felt threatened by my 25 followers. I'm such a twitter noob, I didn't even add a hashtag.
A major scandal is erupting in the multibillion dollar industry of fantasy sports, the online and unregulated business in which players assemble their fantasy teams with real athletes. On Monday, the two major fantasy companies were forced to release statements defending their businesses’ integrity after what amounted to allegations of insider trading, that employees were placing bets on information not available to the public. Last week, a DraftKings employee admitted to inadvertently releasing data before the start of the third week of N.F.L. games, a move akin to insider trading in the stock market. The employee – a midlevel content manager — won $350,000 at rival site FanDuel that same week.
And here's the thread discussing it in /news , which has been removed by the moderators there. The thread helps explain what exactly the employees were doing and how they were getting an unfair advantage.
So I am kind of confused as to why a lot of the "sports betting" type fantasy football league sites are able to operate and advertise without violating some laws (Draft Kings, Fan Duel, etc.). Basically my understanding of why poker has problems in the US is due to wire act laws, and it seems like these fantasy sports sites seem to be doing the same thing, but they advertize heavily on radio and TV. Can someone explain this to me?
ELI5: the difference between Draft Kings and Pokerstars?
I understand that one is a poker site and the other a fantasy sports betting site.. but to me I still see Draft Kings operating very very similar to online poker. IMO betting on a fantasy team is just as much skill and chance as poker. How does someone like Draft Kings stay in business sponsoring huge US sporting events and we can't play poker legally online in the US? I could be stretching here but I was just curious what your thoughts are
We were asked this in class and a lot of people had trouble answering this. What are some example of some legal quasi-gambling businesses in society?
You can't run a lottery company in America because gambling businesses are illegal, but are there any legal-loophole like businesses where it's basically gambling? Casinos are an obvious one, but besides loot boxes and fantasy sport betting sites, what else?

Once again Bill was right and ahead of the game: Nevada regulators, only state with legal sports betting, shuts down intrastate operations of fantasy sites like Draftkings until they agree to buy 'gambling' licenses.
