The Importance of Freeform Character Creation in Cyberpunk 2077

I'm pretty sure people talked about this subject when the gender-optionless character creator was announced a while back, but I could find anything and maybe i have something unique to say. If not, let me know and I'll delete the post. I actually made this post a comment a day ago but I think that whole post got deleted so my comment's gone, too.
I've been seeing arguments about why genital customization is necessary, and the sexual nature of Cyberpunk 2077's universe. I can understand where these arguments are stemming from, especially from people who prefer gameplay and presentation over lore, immersion, and worldbuilding. Every facet of a game takes time and money to implement. Resources spent on one thing could have been spent somewhere else, and if an element is unused/underused/ignored, then it is effectively wasted resources. In this case, genital customization that you can't even see or really interact with at all outside character creation feels like a waste. Like getting a butt tattoo in a game that's never-nude.
However, this game is cyberpunk and cyberpunk is all about rebellion, using technology (whether digital or analogue) to advance beyond nature's intentions, and pure, uninhibited personal freedom. The societies of cyberpunk, megacorporation-run dystopian urban wastelands, aren't free at all, but that is the role of the cyberpunk: to battle that oppression and wrest their freedom from the chains of society. As a fiction, this narrative can be very cathartic or eye-opening for many people. Sex is a part of that. But, perhaps more broadly, total character customization, even parts you won't necessarily use, are a reflection of that freedom and rebellion.
Cyberpunk 2077's genderless character creation is a game-changer on a fundamental level. We're so used to binary character representation in games. Boy or girl. Gay or straight. Up or down. It's two-dimensional and not reflective of actual human experience. No fiction, or even art, can be a total reflection of human experience, but our job as artists is to constantly strive for greater heights, to push the envelope on what is expected, "normal." And I think that's a little cyberpunk in and of itself, too.
Without strict, binary gender selection, many people will get to create a more authentic experience for themselves than they have ever before. As a trans woman, I now get to be in a game. Trans characters exist in games (Poison, Birdo, Krem) but they've never been protagonists, and certainly never custom protagonists. This is a way to implement trans identities in numerous ways without explicitly making a "trans" option available at gender selection. In fact, having that option would probably result in some stereotypes being reinforced in terms of body diversity and gender presentation. But, with this subtle, loose body construction with voice actor selection, it's easier to place a queer experience without making it explicit. Queer, cis, gender-fluid; all these identities can be represented simultaneously.
Maybe your meticulously crafted micro-penis may never see the light of day in-game, but having that customization there says something about the themes of the game, the messages it wants to tell, and an avenue of representation for people who have been long ignored. This isn't about sex. It's about freedom. I think that's worth the extra effort.

General feedback and thoughts about the expansion

Now that the excitement has simmered down a bit, let's discuss the expansion as a whole.
The main thign I liked about this expansion was the theme and the design of the set (and by design, I do not necessarily mean balance, but we will get to that). In fact, many things I really liked.
So, the ideas were good. Many were great, in my opinion. The theme and feel of the expansion is fatastic. However, the execution was far less optimal.
The seasonal tree is probably one of the worst I have seen thus far. Quests like playing 45 bombs or winning rounds by 20 points do not encourage certain aspects of deck building and isn't something you can just do easily as the season goes by. What ended up happening is that players specifically designed stupids decks to get those nodes out of the way, which is not fun.
The next issue is the severely skewed balance, giving the impression that many things were not fully playtested. Skellige is probably the worst offender with CDPR stubborny holding on to Second Wind (and other double play abilities), despite it being shown time and time against that they break the game. Scenarios and arguably poison are still as oppressive as before and many of the old binary interactions still exist, despite CDPRs promises to remove those. Some factions really got the short end of the stick in some aspects. For example, Viraxas seems to be the least used and useful of all the evolving cards, Firesworn as an archetype has many design flaws and Echo cards like Dies Irae and the Frost card are very underwhelming compared to the glory of Amphibious Assault and Blood Eagle.
Gaunter's Ultimate Challenge is a decent idea of paper that encourages players to explore different factions, and after CDPR reworked the quests, they are also doable by newer players. This part is cool. However, yet another economy nerf, which went unannounced overshadowed that. While CDPR did introduce the daily RP gain, verdict is still out on whether it was a genuine move or a "sorry we got caught" one. In either case, this represents a major problem that has been evolving, which is the growing distance between CDPR and the players. Communication is sorely lacking, changes come unannounced and many of the statements are PR statements. This comes in addition of player feedback being regarded as less relevant, instead referring to algorithms for balancing, which has been shown to be a bad idea.
To sum up my thoughts, the ideas, themes and aethetics of the expansion were fantastic and extra kudos to the artists and art design team. However, while the spirit was there, the execution was lacking, both on a technical level, as well as balancing. While the unique situation we are in definitely accounts of some of the issues, I feel like poor practices are taking root and communication is receeding. Once glaring balancing issue have been dealt with, I am sure the expansion will be fine. I am enjoying it so far. But I am becoming increasingly worried about the future and I hope and the Cyberpunk release, as well as Covid are responsible for most of the missteps.
Let's your your thoughts of the expansion. And please, be civil and constructive.

a non-transphobic defense of the existence of the late r/GenderCritical subreddit (the necessity of seeing motherhood as a class)

I want to first assert that I am not a radfem TERF. Before you judge my politics, let me take you through what I believe about gender.
  1. There is no gender essentialism. Humans are like animals. We do not have souls. We do not have a gender inside of us. I am a woman but I don't 'feel like a woman' inside me. In fact, at some point I used to identify publicly as non-binary because I thought it was a fact of reality that everyone was empty of this thing called 'gender' inside of us. I subscribed to anti-humanist ideas.
    1. Corollary: I reject any notion of a Cartesian spirit or soul or spiritual gender as non-materialist.
  2. Gender is expressed through sex and sexuality. You are born a certain sex and with a sexuality that is both innate (gay or straight) but also capable of developing or changing during pubescence based on experiences that shape your ego (fetishes). In nature, it makes sense for animals to change their appearance (sex) to achieve sexual gratification (reproduction). Our bodies know more than we can say because sexuality is beyond language and not subservient to what our ego thinks or logically demands. If you were born a homosexual and were an effeminate child, you might become a trans woman because you are attracted to heterosexual men or bears. If that isn't the case and you are attracted to mostly straight women and have no desire for SRS, then maybe your desire to transition is a sexual expression based on a desire to conceal your sex for the sake of non-traditional sexual intercourse that you find erotic. THAT IS OK. I do very kinky stuff in bed as well. I am also incapable of admitting what I do in bed because my ego wants to protect my fetishes that are dependent on secrecy.
    1. Corollary: There is no concrete reality to 'gender,' it is either expressed physically through sex or physically through sexuality (actions and communication geared towards sex).
  3. Non-binary gender identity has arisen because of how the PMC class engages in immaterial labor. Since there is no reality to gender outside of sex or sexuality (the expression of sex drive), we can't 'perceive' our gender identity, we can only enact it. The present PMC class of college educated women and non-binary queer people are no longer engaging in productive labor that still resembles traditional 'labor' and not just clicking things on a screen or typing posts for Woke McDonald's. They no longer have to engage in reproductive labor or care labor, and when they do, they turn it into a microtransaction to let capial manage their hearts (hey, paypal me for explaining this to you, cis man). Women now have to be seen as equal subjects under capital because they need to be equally subject to capital's formal exploitation through the wage. When a woman says, "I must not be anything because I don't feel anything inside," it's because gender isn't essential and isn't something you feel like a soul. You feel nothing because you are depressed because you can't have kids under capitalism and are kind of sexually frustrated, and because you aren't engaging in labor that makes you feel like a 'woman' (mothering and reproductive labor), or a million other reasons that have to do with your working conditions and the stupid life you're being forced to eke out. If you are like me, 'doing things' that express 'gender' (sexuality, sex acts, and reproductive labor) will actually make you 'feel like a woman.' If you aren't feeling anything, the problem is the job and life you are being forced to live, which is alienated and unnatural. And not all women are meant to be mothers. You need to follow your 'vocation' (what you feel).
  4. Women entered the workforce around the same time the middle class started to boom. The middle class is being replace by the PMC. The PMC require exploitative reproductive practices in order to maintain their family structure and the reproduction of the middle class as a whole. Middle class couples traditionally needed one income to support a family, and their gen X/millennial children need two. Their children are PMC. Due to the falling rate of profit, it now takes two parents' incomes to raise a child in the middle class. There is a generational gap because of the falling rate of profit. PMC jobs were created by the middle class not by increasing labor production directly (more workers, more machines) but through maximizing the techniques used to control labor for profit--- that is why we see the growth of the managerial class, the PMC. Profit is created from unwaged work. The PMC tap into profit by creating microtransactions out of areas of life that used to not be able to be accessed by the wage. This 'technology' (by technology, I mean machines plus the sum total of all science including social science) is what they pay huge sums of future labor (student debt is promising future work/wage) to be able to access. In order to pay back their student debt, PMC women must engage in formal labor in a workplace, even if they have children. This fundamentally changes our social structure because it causes women to outsource their own reproductive labor to working class women. Look at how the median income of college graduates has shifted over the course of the last few decades--- parental incomes ($142,000 for Virginia Tech) are over double the median income at age 34 ($62,000). It now takes two incomes to raise one family, which leads to assortative mating.
  5. Liberation of the working class requires the liberation working mothers from capitalism. Working mothers have it hard. Either we do all of our own reproductive labor (homemaking, childcare, cooking) on top of our formal labor (our job) to provide for our families, or we share that labor with our partner if we are lucky to have one--- and he is also overworked. We know it is impossible to "double our workloads" because we already work as much as we can, so the sad truth is working outside of our families comes at the cost of the work we can do to support our own families, and it is easier to be fired for being a bad employee than it is to be fired for being a bad mom. But there's a third option: maybe we think that we can work hard enough in our jobs to afford better childcare to give our kids an advantage. But a family in Virginia already has to spend 18 percent of their income on childcare for an infant, and nowhere in America does any state provide what is considered affordable childcare (lower than 8 percent of our incomes). If you happen to be college-educated and debt-free, you might be able to make enough at your job to pay other women to do your reproductive labor for you--- you can use apps to hire maids, babysitters, meals, laundry, anything. But when you order a cleaning lady or babysitter to your apartment, you are ignoring the fact that she also has kids. You are paying her as little as possible because you are merely PMC. By nature of you buying her labor away from her own family, you have already ordered the social world into one where some children have better care during their most important formative years. And the working class women who aren't engaging in reproductive labor for the PMC/MC are engaged in working class labor, and the number one thing that prevents working class women from being able to become politically active is they are afraid a strike will threaten their job security, which for them threatens their children's security. Box store and essential workplaces can only strike if they find a way to collectivize childcare and give mutual aid to working women. Working mothers have specific issues that need to be organized around as our own class because we have uteruses that produce capital by producing labor and we are biologically bound to the reproduction of our children.
  6. A UBI for women and familial caregivers (a 'care wage' or 'wages for housework') would be revolutionary. Capitalism is based off of the unpaid/underpaid reproductive labor of women, and would not be able to sustain itself without the exploitation of women beginning at the very origin of the family unit: the working mother. If working class women had a UBI, they could safely go on strike without worrying that their children will starve. If PMC women have a UBI, they can mother their own children and stop outsourcing their reproductive labor to the exploited working class. Religious social conservatives want the protection of the family unit. All of this can be framed as pro-life. Without economic pressure, women can better vet their partners and find good fathers who will provide for them. This UBI should also apply to all single parents and for one partner is a queer co-parenting partnership. It should also apply to all caregivers since 40% of COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. have occurred in nursing homes. We need to bring our elderly back home, and we can only afford to be full-time care providers if we are given a wage for it. If non-violent incarcerated men are also returned to their communities, the need for the state will wither away because working class family units can stabilize society long enough during an interim period until work is locally re-organized between workers based completely on mutual consent and a division of resources based on supporting the most vulnerable members of our society evenly: children.

If hypothetically a UBI for mothers is too problematic for the left, then the left is the problem.

You are not a communist if you are unwilling to make sacrifices for your community. You should be willing to sacrifice if it means over 50% of society (WOMEN AND CHILDREN) would benefit the most. All working class people could be liberated by a UBI for women. If you are less than 1% of the population, you must make your interests coincide with the interests of the working class and stop blocking material progress for women. This broad desire (UBI for mothers) can also be extended beyond sex and sexuality to include queer parents and familial caregivers easily. What prevents people from even imagining the idea of a UBI for mothers is their fear of being called out on being TERFS or being seen as too trad and unwoke.
I am a materialist feminist. I am mostly inspired by the Wages for Housework campaign from 70s Italy. I am also pretty trad because I am a heterosexual woman who believes in god (because of fucking Wittgenstein and Simone Weil, please help) who wants to have kids but cannot under capitalism because I don't think it's ethical to give birth to a future worker under capitalism especially because we are on track for global destruction because of climate change. But I would have children under communism in a heartbeat because I think it will look more like stateless socialism, like early christian communities with a division of labor based around our sexual drives and moral agreements (which ultimately should be about affirming life and protecting children). Most queer anarchists I know love the idea of queer separatism anyway. People with different moral agreements on reproduction should form their own communities (even if it means forming communities within cities). I have loved many leftist trans women more than I can possibly ever say. But motherhood is a biological, materialist class. Babies need their mothers. Children need their mothers. Substitutes are ersatz. Adults need their mothers. Before you get offended about this, please think of your own mom and what she has done to support you. Think of how scary it is that women's bodies have to basically cleave in half under the threat of bleeding out in order to produce a baby (and each baby is the production of a future worker, a future member of your community).
This understanding of gender also makes sense for working class men. High school guys shoot up their cafeterias because of existential sexual frustration: they know that no matter what they do under capitalism, they will never be able to earn enough to attract a woman who could be a housewife happily for them. There are women who want to be housewives, who would agree to a partnership if it meant they didn't have to engage in productive labor and could focus on the reproduction of their children instead. If we make it possible for working class women to be able to 'depend' on working class men again for a larger income, we can create social harmony.
Please don't cancel me, I have already given up everything to organize for communism from within the working class. This is just what I believe.

Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Swaps* (*But Were Afraid To Ask)

Hello, dummies
It's your old pal, Fuzzy.
As I'm sure you've all noticed, a lot of the stuff that gets posted here is - to put it delicately - fucking ridiculous. More backwards-ass shit gets posted to wallstreetbets than you'd see on a Westboro Baptist community message board. I mean, I had a look at the daily thread yesterday and..... yeesh. I know, I know. We all make like the divine Laura Dern circa 1992 on the daily and stick our hands deep into this steaming heap of shit to find the nuggets of valuable and/or hilarious information within (thanks for reading, BTW). I agree. I love it just the way it is too. That's what makes WSB great.
What I'm getting at is that a lot of the stuff that gets posted here - notwithstanding it being funny or interesting - is just... wrong. Like, fucking your cousin wrong. And to be clear, I mean the fucking your *first* cousin kinda wrong, before my Southerners in the back get all het up (simmer down, Billy Ray - I know Mabel's twice removed on your grand-sister's side). Truly, I try to let it slide. I do my bit to try and put you on the right path. Most of the time, I sleep easy no matter how badly I've seen someone explain what a bank liquidity crisis is. But out of all of those tens of thousands of misguided, autistic attempts at understanding the world of high finance, one thing gets so consistently - so *emphatically* - fucked up and misunderstood by you retards that last night I felt obligated at the end of a long work day to pull together this edition of Finance with Fuzzy just for you. It's so serious I'm not even going to make a u/pokimane gag. Have you guessed what it is yet? Here's a clue. It's in the title of the post.
That's right, friends. Today in the neighborhood we're going to talk all about hedging in financial markets - spots, swaps, collars, forwards, CDS, synthetic CDOs, all that fun shit. Don't worry; I'm going to explain what all the scary words mean and how they impact your OTM RH positions along the way.
We're going to break it down like this. (1) "What's a hedge, Fuzzy?" (2) Common Hedging Strategies and (3) All About ISDAs and Credit Default Swaps.
Before we begin. For the nerds and JV traders in the back (and anyone else who needs to hear this up front) - I am simplifying these descriptions for the purposes of this post. I am also obviously not going to try and cover every exotic form of hedge under the sun or give a detailed summation of what caused the financial crisis. If you are interested in something specific ask a question, but don't try and impress me with your Investopedia skills or technical points I didn't cover; I will just be forced to flex my years of IRL experience on you in the comments and you'll look like a big dummy.
TL;DR? Fuck you. There is no TL;DR. You've come this far already. What's a few more paragraphs? Put down the Cheetos and try to concentrate for the next 5-7 minutes. You'll learn something, and I promise I'll be gentle.
Ready? Let's get started.
1. The Tao of Risk: Hedging as a Way of Life
The simplest way to characterize what a hedge 'is' is to imagine every action having a binary outcome. One is bad, one is good. Red lines, green lines; uppie, downie. With me so far? Good. A 'hedge' is simply the employment of a strategy to mitigate the effect of your action having the wrong binary outcome. You wanted X, but you got Z! Frowny face. A hedge strategy introduces a third outcome. If you hedged against the possibility of Z happening, then you can wind up with Y instead. Not as good as X, but not as bad as Z. The technical definition I like to give my idiot juniors is as follows:
Utilization of a defensive strategy to mitigate risk, at a fraction of the cost to capital of the risk itself.
Congratulations. You just finished Hedging 101. "But Fuzzy, that's easy! I just sold a naked call against my 95% OTM put! I'm adequately hedged!". Spoiler alert: you're not (although good work on executing a collar, which I describe below). What I'm talking about here is what would be referred to as a 'perfect hedge'; a binary outcome where downside is totally mitigated by a risk management strategy. That's not how it works IRL. Pay attention; this is the tricky part.
You can't take a single position and conclude that you're adequately hedged because risks are fluid, not static. So you need to constantly adjust your position in order to maximize the value of the hedge and insure your position. You also need to consider exposure to more than one category of risk. There are micro (specific exposure) risks, and macro (trend exposure) risks, and both need to factor into the hedge calculus.
That's why, in the real world, the value of hedging depends entirely on the design of the hedging strategy itself. Here, when we say "value" of the hedge, we're not talking about cash money - we're talking about the intrinsic value of the hedge relative to the the risk profile of your underlying exposure. To achieve this, people hedge dynamically. In wallstreetbets terms, this means that as the value of your position changes, you need to change your hedges too. The idea is to efficiently and continuously distribute and rebalance risk across different states and periods, taking value from states in which the marginal cost of the hedge is low and putting it back into states where marginal cost of the hedge is high, until the shadow value of your underlying exposure is equalized across your positions. The punchline, I guess, is that one static position is a hedge in the same way that the finger paintings you make for your wife's boyfriend are art - it's technically correct, but you're only playing yourself by believing it.
Anyway. Obviously doing this as a small potatoes trader is hard but it's worth taking into account. Enough basic shit. So how does this work in markets?
2. A Hedging Taxonomy
The best place to start here is a practical question. What does a business need to hedge against? Think about the specific risk that an individual business faces. These are legion, so I'm just going to list a few of the key ones that apply to most corporates. (1) You have commodity risk for the shit you buy or the shit you use. (2) You have currency risk for the money you borrow. (3) You have rate risk on the debt you carry. (4) You have offtake risk for the shit you sell. Complicated, right? To help address the many and varied ways that shit can go wrong in a sophisticated market, smart operators like yours truly have devised a whole bundle of different instruments which can help you manage the risk. I might write about some of the more complicated ones in a later post if people are interested (CDO/CLOs, strip/stack hedges and bond swaps with option toggles come to mind) but let's stick to the basics for now.
(i) Swaps
A swap is one of the most common forms of hedge instrument, and they're used by pretty much everyone that can afford them. The language is complicated but the concept isn't, so pay attention and you'll be fine. This is the most important part of this section so it'll be the longest one.
Swaps are derivative contracts with two counterparties (before you ask, you can't trade 'em on an exchange - they're OTC instruments only). They're used to exchange one cash flow for another cash flow of equal expected value; doing this allows you to take speculative positions on certain financial prices or to alter the cash flows of existing assets or liabilities within a business. "Wait, Fuzz; slow down! What do you mean sets of cash flows?". Fear not, little autist. Ol' Fuzz has you covered.
The cash flows I'm talking about are referred to in swap-land as 'legs'. One leg is fixed - a set payment that's the same every time it gets paid - and the other is variable - it fluctuates (typically indexed off the price of the underlying risk that you are speculating on / protecting against). You set it up at the start so that they're notionally equal and the two legs net off; so at open, the swap is a zero NPV instrument. Here's where the fun starts. If the price that you based the variable leg of the swap on changes, the value of the swap will shift; the party on the wrong side of the move ponies up via the variable payment. It's a zero sum game.
I'll give you an example using the most vanilla swap around; an interest rate trade. Here's how it works. You borrow money from a bank, and they charge you a rate of interest. You lock the rate up front, because you're smart like that. But then - quelle surprise! - the rate gets better after you borrow. Now you're bagholding to the tune of, I don't know, 5 bps. Doesn't sound like much but on a billion dollar loan that's a lot of money (a classic example of the kind of 'small, deep hole' that's terrible for profits). Now, if you had a swap contract on the rate before you entered the trade, you're set; if the rate goes down, you get a payment under the swap. If it goes up, whatever payment you're making to the bank is netted off by the fact that you're borrowing at a sub-market rate. Win-win! Or, at least, Lose Less / Lose Less. That's the name of the game in hedging.
There are many different kinds of swaps, some of which are pretty exotic; but they're all different variations on the same theme. If your business has exposure to something which fluctuates in price, you trade swaps to hedge against the fluctuation. The valuation of swaps is also super interesting but I guarantee you that 99% of you won't understand it so I'm not going to try and explain it here although I encourage you to google it if you're interested.
Because they're OTC, none of them are filed publicly. Someeeeeetimes you see an ISDA (dsicussed below) but the confirms themselves (the individual swaps) are not filed. You can usually read about the hedging strategy in a 10-K, though. For what it's worth, most modern credit agreements ban speculative hedging. Top tip: This is occasionally something worth checking in credit agreements when you invest in businesses that are debt issuers - being able to do this increases the risk profile significantly and is particularly important in times of economic volatility (ctrl+f "non-speculative" in the credit agreement to be sure).
(ii) Forwards
A forward is a contract made today for the future delivery of an asset at a pre-agreed price. That's it. "But Fuzzy! That sounds just like a futures contract!". I know. Confusing, right? Just like a futures trade, forwards are generally used in commodity or forex land to protect against price fluctuations. The differences between forwards and futures are small but significant. I'm not going to go into super boring detail because I don't think many of you are commodities traders but it is still an important thing to understand even if you're just an RH jockey, so stick with me.
Just like swaps, forwards are OTC contracts - they're not publicly traded. This is distinct from futures, which are traded on exchanges (see The Ballad Of Big Dick Vick for some more color on this). In a forward, no money changes hands until the maturity date of the contract when delivery and receipt are carried out; price and quantity are locked in from day 1. As you now know having read about BDV, futures are marked to market daily, and normally people close them out with synthetic settlement using an inverse position. They're also liquid, and that makes them easier to unwind or close out in case shit goes sideways.
People use forwards when they absolutely have to get rid of the thing they made (or take delivery of the thing they need). If you're a miner, or a farmer, you use this shit to make sure that at the end of the production cycle, you can get rid of the shit you made (and you won't get fucked by someone taking cash settlement over delivery). If you're a buyer, you use them to guarantee that you'll get whatever the shit is that you'll need at a price agreed in advance. Because they're OTC, you can also exactly tailor them to the requirements of your particular circumstances.
These contracts are incredibly byzantine (and there are even crazier synthetic forwards you can see in money markets for the true degenerate fund managers). In my experience, only Texan oilfield magnates, commodities traders, and the weirdo forex crowd fuck with them. I (i) do not own a 10 gallon hat or a novelty size belt buckle (ii) do not wake up in the middle of the night freaking out about the price of pork fat and (iii) love greenbacks too much to care about other countries' monopoly money, so I don't fuck with them.
(iii) Collars
No, not the kind your wife is encouraging you to wear try out to 'spice things up' in the bedroom during quarantine. Collars are actually the hedging strategy most applicable to WSB. Collars deal with options! Hooray!
To execute a basic collar (also called a wrapper by tea-drinking Brits and people from the Antipodes), you buy an out of the money put while simultaneously writing a covered call on the same equity. The put protects your position against price drops and writing the call produces income that offsets the put premium. Doing this limits your tendies (you can only profit up to the strike price of the call) but also writes down your risk. If you screen large volume trades with a VOL/OI of more than 3 or 4x (and they're not bullshit biotech stocks), you can sometimes see these being constructed in real time as hedge funds protect themselves on their shorts.
(3) All About ISDAs, CDS and Synthetic CDOs
You may have heard about the mythical ISDA. Much like an indenture (discussed in my post on $F), it's a magic legal machine that lets you build swaps via trade confirms with a willing counterparty. They are very complicated legal documents and you need to be a true expert to fuck with them. Fortunately, I am, so I do. They're made of two parts; a Master (which is a form agreement that's always the same) and a Schedule (which amends the Master to include your specific terms). They are also the engine behind just about every major credit crunch of the last 10+ years.
First - a brief explainer. An ISDA is a not in and of itself a hedge - it's an umbrella contract that governs the terms of your swaps, which you use to construct your hedge position. You can trade commodities, forex, rates, whatever, all under the same ISDA.
Let me explain. Remember when we talked about swaps? Right. So. You can trade swaps on just about anything. In the late 90s and early 2000s, people had the smart idea of using other people's debt and or credit ratings as the variable leg of swap documentation. These are called credit default swaps. I was actually starting out at a bank during this time and, I gotta tell you, the only thing I can compare people's enthusiasm for this shit to was that moment in your early teens when you discover jerking off. Except, unlike your bathroom bound shame sessions to Mom's Sears catalogue, every single person you know felt that way too; and they're all doing it at once. It was a fiscal circlejerk of epic proportions, and the financial crisis was the inevitable bukkake finish. WSB autism is absolutely no comparison for the enthusiasm people had during this time for lighting each other's money on fire.
Here's how it works. You pick a company. Any company. Maybe even your own! And then you write a swap. In the swap, you define "Credit Event" with respect to that company's debt as the variable leg . And you write in... whatever you want. A ratings downgrade, default under the docs, failure to meet a leverage ratio or FCCR for a certain testing period... whatever. Now, this started out as a hedge position, just like we discussed above. The purest of intentions, of course. But then people realized - if bad shit happens, you make money. And banks... don't like calling in loans or forcing bankruptcies. Can you smell what the moral hazard is cooking?
Enter synthetic CDOs. CDOs are basically pools of asset backed securities that invest in debt (loans or bonds). They've been around for a minute but they got famous in the 2000s because a shitload of them containing subprime mortgage debt went belly up in 2008. This got a lot of publicity because a lot of sad looking rednecks got foreclosed on and were interviewed on CNBC. "OH!", the people cried. "Look at those big bad bankers buying up subprime loans! They caused this!". Wrong answer, America. The debt wasn't the problem. What a lot of people don't realize is that the real meat of the problem was not in regular way CDOs investing in bundles of shit mortgage debts in synthetic CDOs investing in CDS predicated on that debt. They're synthetic because they don't have a stake in the actual underlying debt; just the instruments riding on the coattails. The reason these are so popular (and remain so) is that smart structured attorneys and bankers like your faithful correspondent realized that an even more profitable and efficient way of building high yield products with limited downside was investing in instruments that profit from failure of debt and in instruments that rely on that debt and then hedging that exposure with other CDS instruments in paired trades, and on and on up the chain. The problem with doing this was that everyone wound up exposed to everybody else's books as a result, and when one went tits up, everybody did. Hence, recession, Basel III, etc. Thanks, Obama.
Heavy investment in CDS can also have a warping effect on the price of debt (something else that happened during the pre-financial crisis years and is starting to happen again now). This happens in three different ways. (1) Investors who previously were long on the debt hedge their position by selling CDS protection on the underlying, putting downward pressure on the debt price. (2) Investors who previously shorted the debt switch to buying CDS protection because the relatively illiquid debt (partic. when its a bond) trades at a discount below par compared to the CDS. The resulting reduction in short selling puts upward pressure on the bond price. (3) The delta in price and actual value of the debt tempts some investors to become NBTs (neg basis traders) who long the debt and purchase CDS protection. If traders can't take leverage, nothing happens to the price of the debt. If basis traders can take leverage (which is nearly always the case because they're holding a hedged position), they can push up or depress the debt price, goosing swap premiums etc. Anyway. Enough technical details.
I could keep going. This is a fascinating topic that is very poorly understood and explained, mainly because the people that caused it all still work on the street and use the same tactics today (it's also terribly taught at business schools because none of the teachers were actually around to see how this played out live). But it relates to the topic of today's lesson, so I thought I'd include it here.
Work depending, I'll be back next week with a covenant breakdown. Most upvoted ticker gets the post.
*EDIT 1\* In a total blowout, $PLAY won. So it's D&B time next week. Post will drop Monday at market open.

Going to a far-left/liberal arts school. How do I survive?

Got accepted into The best art school in my state, but it’s super liberal. And it’s bad. The housing forms have a “non-binary” option when choosing your sex.
How do I not get metoo’d, make sure I play my cards right and not get labeled as racist, misogynistic, or a rapist?
I don’t usually care about people’s opinions like that, but in this case, reputation spreads fast, and in my major (Film Production), it’s hard to network with a bad reputation.
I know about ”Never talk about RAPE” (Religion, Abortion, Politics, Ethnicity) but is there anymore advice you guys would recommend?

Petition to Rename Cornell University to Cayuga University

I believe that renaming Cornell University to Cayuga University along with a few other common sense changes solidify the anti-racist push by the administration. Some of these suggestions may seem extreme, but extreme racism requires extreme solutions. The previous petitions written by Non-Privileged Cornellians (NPCs) suggest that we fix racism by disarming the police, replacing Prof. Collum with a black professor, creating hate-speech victim therapy sessions, and founding an anti-racist institute. I use the term NPC instead of Cornellian of color (COC) to be more inclusive to those with physical disabilities, learning disabilities, and non-male and non-binary genders.
While these astute suggestions are a step in the right direction, they do not go far enough! Here are my demands to the university:
These are just some of many options that we should consider in our anti-racist push at Cornell. Others include firing more white professors (not just Prof. Collum), banning Apple products until they release black airpods, expanding racially segregated living (e.g. Akwe:kon and Ujamaa), and adding GPA boosts for NPCs. I would love to hear all the suggestions we can come up with as a community, so please list all your ideas in the comments! If there is enough support, I will compile the list of comments into a petition, march along into Day Hall, and personally hand it to Martha.

The LGBT Is One Of The Most Toxic Communities Out There

And I'm ashamed to even be technically in it. I have never seen so much gate-keeping, hatred, misinformation, liars, and overall mentally ill people within one community that's SUPPOSED to spread joy and acceptance. You can say religion has that kinda toxicity- but holy fuck, that's a belief system! Not grounded within science! It's focused on the afterlife, so of course people will be so confused and bitter!

I don't care how "oppressed" you are, you entitled asshole. They reject science in the means of 'not wanting to look bad' like with trans being a mental illness- when in reality, if you accept the fact being trans means you are mentally ill and you know.. feeling uncomfortable with your body in that kinda level is unhealthy, then more and more people will be less discriminatory.
We don't go around attacking at schizophrenics because they see things we can't. We don't normally shame people for wanting to die. IDC if you say "yeah we do!! people out there do that!!" because it ain't the majority. We have come a long way as a society, nowadays we take mental illness seriously.
The LGBT attack others for their sexual preferences, they want people to make 'exceptions' to them instead of just wanting everyone to be treated equal. They are the ones going around being like "omg!! Trigger warnings! Youre this! Youre that! Media should be censored cuz it may hurt someones feelings!"
They put THEIR feelings before anything else. They put it before empathy, they put it before logic, they put it before reason. We have all these stupid labels that are not needed and make no fucking sense like demisexual, bigender, agender, non-binary etc.
People say pansexul is a bit dumb- and I agree, but it usually means you are willing to fuck/date a trans person. However, what do you get with shoving your sexuality everywhere? Oh cool, you're gay? Nice. Who cares, this isn't a dating site. I bet my ass if you list how you are 'straight' on your profile, people out there will automatically use that against you if you make any argument within the LGBT community. Imagine if the roles were reversed!
I'm not even generalizing the community- I have yet to see people who label themselves within the community that are not problematic and overly-emotional- that's the issue. Everyone wants to 'fight injustice' yet the majority of them are in America where they are treated the best and have every right like everyone else. Quit that whole "trans rights are human rights" and "_ says trans rights!" bullshit. You are literally looking into the past and bringing up past events. Sorry Karen we don't agree with you wanting to make your kids question their gender and give them existential crisis in the name of "political justice".
It's so bad that those people sorta have all this power because they all work together in attacking others.
"Oh? You think gender equals sex because you have evidence and we don't? OMG TRANSPHOBE!!!! Have fun losing your job!"
They are out here getting 'scared' over anyone's disagreement. Grow the fuck up, oh my god. Your sensitivity is only proving our point that y'all mentally ill.

I feel so bad for anyone who is simply gay, or bi, or pan even- who know the facts and just want to live peacefully but have to deal with their own community making anyone is is l, g, b, or t look like crybabies and shit. The LGBT community does not represent what l, g, b, and t people are actually like. The community is full of special snowflakes who just want labels and to have special treatment. That's the majority, unfortunately. What a shame, I'm disgusted to be interested in my own sex thanks to a community that was supposed to support everyone and remove false information.

EDIT: I cant take this, I really cant. A lot of people are so disgusting and making huge assumptions because boohoo.
Disagree. Fine. But attack me? Look through my post history and make fun of me for post to mentalhealth, discredit my complaints because I want to die and I have mental breakdowns of my own. Call me 'insane' and say my art is trash- what the actual fuck.
To all the sane-minded people out there agreeing and explaining there experiences dealing with the community, I am so grateful and I'm sorry if all the extremists downvote your comments. I know everyone is so obsessed with downvoting mine and saying awful things.
People are twisting this post so badly that it is insane. Oh, and people are going around saying I'm a guy, that I'm straight, that I'm 'Conservative'. Again.. This only proves my point. You getting angry over this is making YOU look bad, and everyone else. You twisting the narrative, you making bold assumptions and saying I'm not in the community, you putting words in my mouth, you GOING THROUGH MY POST HISTORY AND DIRECTLY ATTACKING ME.
Which, BY THE WAY, is against the rules and just.. Disgusting really. I wouldn't be reacting this way, I wouldn't even be making this edit, if people were mature and not pulling that shit. Not going THAT far. I tired explaining that in the replies, that hey, you shouldn't be saying that- what the fuck,, you're sick- and then you freaks downvote it. All because I criticized your beloved community. You think that makes it okay to insult my art, inslut my mental health, insult the personal issues I'm going through and discredit me, all because my life isn't perfect and I use safe communities like mental health to talk about it.

Let's... Start off with the points I made.
- I made a comment about trans people, saying they are mentally ill and targeting THE ONES who deny their mental illness- I did not say all.
- One of the things people are lying about is that I said the LGBT is worst than religious people- no I did not. I said religion isn't a community, it's a belief system so it is unfair to compare them. Every belief system will be toxic and divided. The LGBT is not a belief system and is grounded in reality, it's supposed to house supportive people who share similar traits and spread love and posititivy.
- When I mentioned trans being a mental illness, I spoke about how if more people accepted it- others outside the community will be less discriminatory. Not in a way to be discredit trans people and pass them off as crazy.
- I said the majority of the community is like this, I did not say all. I am not 'generalizing' the community. IDC if you know nice people, or you are around nice people- the fact of the matter is the community as a whole is unevenly divided when it shouldn't. I shouldn't have to guess whether or not a community member is going to support my views and feelings. This is how it is, I see it both offline and online. If you want to discredit my views and feel it;s irrational, then fine. Go ahead, we all have different experiences and I am happy for you if you haven't been discriminated against by the people whose suppose to have your back.
- I should mention this again, because people are reaaaaaaaaaaaaallly dense: I am not talking about the whole community. I am talking about what I deem the majority and how I shouldn't have to feel unafe within my own fucking community- and how it's unfair that nice people within the community are overshadowed by all te hate and division. Am NOT attacking everyone in the community. If you get offended by this, you are probably the ones gate-keeping and being mean to the people who share your community- OR you misread this and assumed I am calling out everyone. No, I am not and I'm sorry if you felt I was,
- I was not angry while making this post, in all honesty. Not your fault if you thought I was, people say I sound angry while typing- or sad or irritated. Nah, I'm pretty laid back. I mean.. This edit? Not so laid back, due to all the stupid shit.
- This post is actually more focused on the LGBT attacking their own memebers, not so them attacking outsiders.
- About the labels, what the fuck you do you mean when you are defending yourselves by saying you are 'diverse"? Look.. I will say this right now and upfront: I DO NOT CARE WHAT YOU CALL YOURSELF. Call yourself whatever! Really! It is not hurting anyone! But you know what does? Demanding strangers to call you that, to associate you with that. At that point, it is a belief system and therefore- you have no right to force others to call you something they don't believe in, if you lack any actual proof. If that wasn't allowed, atheists wouldn't exist. This is not directed at trans people who gone through surgery, since they have the science to tell them they are indeed that gender. You can physically change your sex, science proves it. Otherwise, we wouldn't be able to do it. Is it normal? Fuck no, feeling shamed of your body is not normal- and that feeling can go away. Not with all cases though, because mental illness isn't so black and white- hence surgery when all else failed. Still not guaranteed happiness after surgery, but if you are an adult- you can do whatever I suppose.
- Someone brought up that raising a kid non-binary prevents self hate, doubt and all that shit. Well, thing is, that is the minority and you are giving that kid needless anxiety by explaining to them that there are options. They'll grow up confused on who they actually are. You are giving them an existential crisis to accommodate to what COULD happen when growing up. Just do the normal thing and be less strict with gender roles. A boy can like barbies, a girl can like GI Joes. It doesn't mean you should confuse them by telling them what is in their pants doesn't equal who they are, and have them look at the other kids worried and scared because they go by 'boy' and 'girl' then they come home and see their family call them something else entirely. They'll be scared and concerned, it is too heavy of a subject to force upon a young child like... Damn. Just accept it is a mental illness to hate your body, and it is not society's fault. Maybe them not knowing whos they are is what creates self- hate and all that shit.

I'm sure there's a thing I missed, will edit this later maybe.

[Review] Ranking all the Switch shmups Ep25 - Q-YO Blaster

There was a time when I believed that shmups could only feature ships. Then games like Parodius came to challenge that belief. If an Octopus can be the player, then anything is possible. And don’t get me started on Cho Aniki…
When it comes to unusual characters for a shmup, it’s always a coin toss. They could either be the most fun you’ve had in a while or end up being a disappointment. Time for me to toss this coin!
Publisher: Forever entertainment
Platform: Nintendo Switch
Release date: Jun 27, 2019
Price: $9.99
Tate: You can, but you might need to tilt your head
Q-YO Blaster is by far the strangest 2D horizontal shmup I’ve reviewed for this ranking list. The gameplay and mechanics aren’t anything particularly odd, but there’s something about the presentation and the lore which is legitimately fascinating. For some reason it feels like a game developed by someone out of this world who learned about our culture through animated movies.

SATURDAY MORNING SHMUP

One of the aspects that tipped me over the edge when deciding what to review was the art style. Keeping up with the animation vibe, Q-YO Blaster sports an old school cartoon art style. Enemies will be colorful creatures with quirky details such as baseball caps, big eyes or even Mickey Mouse styled gloves. Their animations are equally as comical whether it is their attack animation of their death animation.
Of course, cartoony can be used to describe maybe half of the style. The other half is probably more akin to a sci-fi coat of paint. Along the many bugs and animals, there’s also a great deal of robots, monsters, heavy weaponry and even blood running rampant (or maybe it’s oil?). It does makes sense considering the bugs came from space, and it definitely adds a touch of mystery when navigating through the stages of Q-YO Blaster.

EVERYONE IS HERE!

My original expectation of the game was to have a few pilots including the Q-YO, floating dog head from the screenshots and doggy airplane. Little did I know that Q-YO Blaster has more pilots than I have fingers in both of my hands.
Pilots are arranged into 3 different teams. Each pilot has different stats which include damage, speed and fire. The teams can have +damage, +endurance or a mixture of both. Fortunately, despite the outrageous pilot designs and sprites, their hitboxes are all the same. After picking your pilot, you can pick one of 7 different special weapons to round out your style. From whichever angle you want to watch it, Q-YO Blaster offers a crazy amount of customization options.
The defining feature of each team is their assistant. Assistant are powerful screen-wide effects that trigger once you fill the assistant gauge. The gauge can be filled by continuously shooting and defeating enemies. Once filled, you can hold the fire button to unleash its effect. The effects are a screen explosion that clears bullets, a temporary shield or a 360 barrage of missiles.

BUILDING YOUR OFFENSE

With all of the previous elements combined, you can play as one of 112 possible combinations of team, pilot and special weapons.
In terms of weapons at your disposal, you have 3: your basic shot, your special weapon and your assistant. Your basic shot is an infinite gun that shoots bullets straight ahead with some degree of spread. The first shot is always straight, so you can opt for manual rapid fire to keep a straight line of fire. Alternatively, you can hold the button and just auto-fire.
Occasionally, you’ll find power-up weapons flying around the stage. This power-ups will grant you a limited weapon when collected. These extra weapons are considerably faster than your basic shot at the cost of having limited ammo. They also have a unique effect on their very first shot, once more giving you a choice between manually shooting or going with the auto-fire.

ALSO BUILD YOUR DEFENSE

One defensive tool you have at your disposal is the pulse. Pulse clears every bullet on screen and turns them into gems. When collected, this gems will increase the level of your special weapon gauge. This special weapon will be whatever you picked on the character select, and has 3 different levels of strength depending on how many gems you have collected. It also comes with some slight invulnerability so you can use it to get out of sticky situations.
The caveat of pulse is that you can only carry 3 stocks, and it is only refilled by collecting extra pulse power-ups. I have mixed feelings about this limitation, as I feel it plays an integral part of your offensive game plan. Its hard limit prevents any smart usage other than just a get-out-of-jail card. I would have loved if it had a gauge like the assistant, as that would have created a balance between building pulse and shooting your special.

LITTLE ADVENTURES

Every stage carries a sort of familiar scenery. I like to think of it as Toy Story levels. Considering the characters are Q-YOs and bugs, it makes sense for the scenery to be a relatively small scale such as houses or gardens. I find them to be very charming, or it might be just my nostalgia kicking in because I grew up with Toy Story. Nonetheless, I really dig the stages.
At the end of each stage, there’s a very comical boss waiting for you. These bosses represent whichever vibe you got from the level. For example, the boss of the garden level is none other than Queen Bee herself. Bosses turn the action up to 11 featuring huge bullet patterns and significantly more aggressive tactics. My one complaint about the bosses is that they feel a lot like a flow chart. They have a couple of attacks and will cycle through them in the same order all the time. Assuming you can dodge them, it’s only a matter of repeating the same moves over and over until the boss goes down. This is even worse on the harder difficulties when the bosses have much more HP.
The most interesting aspects of the stages are the end rewards. Similar to many rogue-lite games, clearing a stage will let you choose a perk for the rest of your adventure. The perks are always the same, but include upgrades such as increased speed, faster shots or even 1ups.

STORY TIME!

Despite being a shmup, I really recommend paying attention to the story! It really is something else! I don’t think it actually makes much sense, but there’s something about the way it’s told that crashes my brain. It does have some powerful moments as well! Including that one stage with the sad music and the rain. I don’t want to spoil it, but it really hit me hard.
I didn’t delve too much into game modes, but there’s basically classic and arcade. Classic is your base mode with the entire story and 3 selectable difficulties. If you don’t want to go through the story every time (even though it is skippable), then arcade mode is for you. Arcade mode features 0 cutscenes, so it’s all fun and games. Arcade mode is also much harder, but has 99 continues.

HARDER ISN’T ALWAYS BETTER

I have to make one of my classic parenthesis to talk about difficulty. Being honest, I think the expert difficulty and to some extent arcade are pretty terrible. The reason is because of the way the game is balanced as a result of them. Harder difficulties feature faster bullets and more complex patterns, but also feature increased vitality for the enemies. The increased lethality of the enemies makes for a hearty challenge, but all good is wiped out by the tedium of enemy endurance.
What I found out was that enemies are very durable in the harder difficulties. Rather than creating a fun challenge, it makes it incredibly hard to destroy enemies. Most enemies feel like sponges that just refuse to die unless you have a special weapon. Some enemies feel outright impossible to kill before they leave the screen, an issue which hurts a lot when it comes to homing projectiles that need to be destroyed. Fun and dynamic dog fights become grindy situations where you focus on a single ship and fail to destroy it while having others flood the screen. I really think harder difficulties would have been better without the added HP on enemies but retaining the faster bullets and harder patterns.

SLOW AND STEADY DOESN’T WIN THE RACE

While on the topic of hard difficulties, the homing bullets are another culprit behind the reason the difficulty isn’t fun. I’ve never been a fan of homing attacks as they feel cheap, but it feels like it wasn’t play tested because some slower ships can’t actually avoid a homing shot without the speed upgrade. To be fair, no one shoots homing bullets on stage 1, so taking speed is utmost priority.
One thing I do like about speed is that most boss patterns allow you to dodge at high speed. You can’t slow your speed, so it’s nice that there isn’t finesse required to survive some waves.

A LITTLE BIT MORE TIME IN THE OVEN

If I was on a game show about quick words and someone mentioned “Q-YO Blaster”, my response would be “rough”. While some aspects of the game are really cool, there are other where it feels a little bit incomplete. Some enemies don’t match the visual quality of others such as Major Tomm. The UI and menus also seem to come from a prototype version.
There’s also a sort of bug where if you die and use a credit, the game immediately pauses. Not a big deal, but it feels out of place. The customization screen is also all sorts of blurry. You can’t remap controls either, which is a shame considering the shoulder buttons would really come in handy.
Most of these issues aren’t a big deal by themselves, but they taint the final product by making it feel a little like shovelware. The game is really fun though, so it is sad to think about having it fall under that umbrella.

FINAL WORDS

So the mandatory question is, is it fun? It definitely is! With its bizarre and unsettling vibe, Q-YO Blaster is still tons of fun to play. While there is certainly a lot of room for improvement, Q-YO Blaster is still a solid choice for a shmup if you are fan of the cartoon style, of the horizontal shmup format or just a fan of little critters in general.

A close examination of the story. Part 8: "Katarina Rostova." The personal angle: wife, daughter, lover, friend.

Tell the story as the narrative would have it, and what we are left with is a mass of contradictions and nonsense, the best indication of a charade. Most of those come from identity. "Katarina Rostova" is one of the sources of the confusion. In part 3 I examined the mythic spy, in part 2, her curious contradiction in Rassvet, about her treasonous status, in part 1 the bizarre abduction of "Masha Rostova" from her Canadian home, in part 4, the likelihood that there was no person born as "Raymond Reddington". Part 5 examines the curious Alan Fitch, and his relationship to Red. Part 6 looks at the real question Jennifer posed of Red, and why was she satisfied with the answer about the individual chased by both the CIA and the KGB, while part 7 deals with her bizarre way of showing Liz the bones, considering she knew well where Liz lived.
In many ways, Red is like a magician, as Aram said. Going by the charade Dom accuses him of creating, "Katarina Rostova" was one of his magic tricks.
"You were the architect of this charade". "she's a figment"
But this myth had a family, friends, colleagues. And Red.
but with young Katarina, and Fakerina, who is who. Was Fakerina one the other women inhabiting the myth? How do we distinguish?
It is clear that all the others are referring to Dom's daughter, the character played by Lotte Verbeek as a young woman. BUT when it comes to Red, things are far more complicated, especially for the space where Liz, and her mother intersect.

For Constantin Rostov, Katarina was the wife who loved him:

I don't really know how we got here, Raymond. I remember being an honest businessman in a happy marriage until you came along.... Seduced my wife. To her credit, Katarina broke it off, but you couldn't let go.... I came home one night and they were gone my wife, my child.
All that matters is that we had a family, and you destroyed it. We had a daughter, and you took her from us.
He describes the time when she and him met and how she seduced him, much like thrill seeker Elodie seduced Aram into a relationship with him:
When when we when we first met, there was this house near where she lived, a case study house built by this famous mid-century architect. Over dinner one night, she said she wanted to look at it. I thought she meant look from the street. But when we got there, she jumped the fence. The lights were on. People lived there. She didn't care. I stood there frozen, angry, nervous. Then I felt this rush of exhilaration. I climbed up, looked into the yard and she was just Dancing. Unafraid. Daring. Being. I'd never seen anything like it.
A woman with a joie-de-vivre
She was more alive than anyone I knew.
He never believed she killed herself, so Constantin believes she is either alive or she was murdered, and she is still convinced that she loved him.
When I heard she killed herself I didn't believe it. I still don't. You're wrong. I didn't see what she wanted me to see of her, I saw her. And despite what happened, I know she loved me.
What happened to Constantin after Katarina left? Was he on the run too? We know he changed his name to Alexander Kirk, we know he started buying energy outfits cheap in the former USSR, but he was a billionaire before:
https://preview.redd.it/zyd1hqr6dj451.png?width=1684&format=png&auto=webp&s=9e7d20c4dc5a5d95b10cf1e100eb5af36cda28ca
Did he loose it all when Katarina left and he was forced to become someone else? Because he continued to operate in Russia, but under a different name. Did he have surgery? Or was the man known to the Russians as Constantin Rostov NOT him? Nobody tells him that they knew him as Constantin Rostov, when he takes the name Alexander Kirk, so that is a possibility.
Red tells her that the KGB had trained Katarina in making people believe what she wanted them to. She had wanted Constantin to believe she was a wife in a happy marriage, that they had a child, and that she loved him. The truth is that she never even let him know she was OK, that she had not committed suicide. She had not let him know that "Masha" was not his daughter. Constantin is not even mentioned by her again, or by Kate, or by Dom. He was a useful idiot in a charade.
I think Red is who gets to understand the depth of the turmoil that Katarina created in his life, when Rostov is on the roof about to jump, a turmoil that years later, he is still defined by a love of Katarina, who left him behind like yesterday's news, and the hatred of Red, who he blames for it all.
This is madness, Constantin. Because you cannot have that child, you're gonna take her forever from her mother? It's madness. Constantin, this needs to end now.
It is clear that the wife Constantin refers to is Katarina, Dom's daughter.

For Kate, Katarina was her best friend, her employer. A tragic figure who was a spy, and a loving mother.

My friend just died.... I think she was my best friend.
she made an uncalled for promise to protect Masha:
I made a promise to Elizabeth's mother to protect her girl at all costs.
she was a bit strange, advising her employer to terminate a relationship with an American, being aware that Katarina was a KGB agent:
KATE: Soviet Intelligence?
This means Kate, an American, was fine with aiding an abetting a soviet spy by caring for her daughter while she went and worked against America. And then she calls Red a traitor? Kate has to have been a Soviet sympathizer, or a sleeper spy. And since people tend to kill agents of the opposite side, it is likely Kate already knew that "Katarina Rostova" was a KGB agent. It may be that Kate used that killing to let Katarina know she knew.
https://preview.redd.it/yzl18d6uuj451.png?width=432&format=png&auto=webp&s=a1466cc768eea5443117f75c2a687da8d9765faa
There is that strange comment that Annie makes after hearing the story:
ANNIE: So what's next for you? You gonna find some more Russians to live with?
KATE: I don't know. - I can't think about it right now. Masha and her family were my whole world for so long.
as if Kate's life had been going from one Russian family to another.
Kate's life was back on track and then Annie is killed. Then she is sucked back for reasons unknown by Red, who in 1997 decides to hire her. Why? Was she starting to investigate Katarina, using the resources of Little Nikos, who could track people?
https://preview.redd.it/ql2o8srbej451.png?width=360&format=png&auto=webp&s=8411e72aa8e919c1c90a9b8bdb937a41e193bd37
She seemed not to even give Constantin Rostov a thought. It never occurred to her to bring Liz to him. Red says Kate did not know about Dom (but she may have known about Oleander). Katarina kept many secrets from her.

For Sam, she was "Kat", obviously someone who trusted him

SAM TO KATE: I'm sorry you had to drive all this way. But I'm in no position to help here. - I told Kat -
SAM TO KATE: Did Kat happen to mention that I'm a grifter?
SAM TO KATE: I know Katarina is not coming back. She called me.

https://preview.redd.it/vkd8ehl5vj451.png?width=310&format=png&auto=webp&s=69a2f8c2e6ed3b183ece5b4f8c896d34fd78faf7
For Sam, Katarina was "Kat" or "Katarina" and she reached out to him to care for Liz, but I doubt he figured it was a permanent thing. In Rassvet he seems anxious Katarina comes back to take her kid:
SAM: Where are you? What's going on? Do you know what they're saying about Reddington?
KATARINA: Sam, I need to talk to her.
SAM: Talk to her! You can come and get her.
Sam is the second person where Red and Katarina intersect. For those who do not believe Red is RR, Sam seemed to have been trusted by all three then. What is intriguing to me is this conversation Red and Sam have in his deathbed:
Oh, my God. I've never been more scared of a woman in my life. She was thrilling in bed. What a pair of legs. I think she played field hockey in college.
Could that woman be Katarina?
It would be difficult to ascertain if both Red and Katarina knew Sam at about the same time, because we do not have a sense when Katarina met him. But we know Red told Liz
I've been friends with Sam for all of yours and most of my life.
I loved Sam, Lizzy. Taking his life was of all the difficult things that I've done that may may be the most.
I have a feeling that Sam is a longtime friend of Red, and met Katarina later, but I have nothing to back it other than the ease at which they are laughing about things, when Sam is dying, contrasting with Sam's way of talking to Katarina, seemingly indignant about what is being said about Reddington, telling her to come back for Liz.

For Dembe

It is clear Dembe has met Liz's mother, he tells Liz so:
He's right. You remind me of her, too.
This is when Liz betrays Red, and tries to hide it. Dembe calls Katarina simply "Katarina":
Raymond I'm not sure Elizabeth will ever be ready to learn about what you did to Katarina.
It is Dembe who comes back in Season 6 telling Red that the Townsend Directive has been reactivated:
The Townsend Directive. Our friend in Miami says it's in play.... He says it's very important.

For Dom, Katarina was his daughter.

Dom always refers to her as "Katarina" or "my daughter".
TO LIZ: Yes, I knew Katarina quite well
TO LIZ: Last time I saw my daughter was in this rearview mirror nearly 30 years ago. If my Katarina was still here, she would have let me know
TO FRANKIE: I never betrayed Katarina . She betrayed me.
EXCEPT when he is talking about the charade of blowing up Fakerina in Belgrade:
And there are witnesses. It's a mess! The world was supposed to see Katarina Rostova die, and instead all we've done is confirm that she's very much alive.
It is the only concession to a charade he makes. He also seems to completely ignore Constantin Rostov, and blames Red for the charade that resulted in his losing his daughter. Yet he says that Katarina betrayed him by fanning the flames of an insurrection, the cabal's plan.
https://preview.redd.it/ny0ysztewj451.png?width=360&format=png&auto=webp&s=5c49cde00d46da52627bad00489a6aaa6a463e74
Dom uses the simple Katarina when talking to Liz:
Ah, Katarina and I, we worked in the same building for a time.
I never heard from Katarina after she left for America.
For Katarina, it wasn't so easy.
A few months after I made it to America, Katarina met me here on that sidewalk.... If my Katarina was still here, she would have let me know.
as he does to Frankie:
My daughter's. Katarina....
I never betrayed Katarina. She betrayed me.
Dom however, has a relationship with both Katarina and Fakerina. She says he asked her to help in keeping his daughter safe:
Dom promised me no one would get hurt. Said he loved his child and just wanted her to be safe.
and he betrayed her. But I find curious that he sends Ilya to ask Fakerina to deliver documents to Dom, when they set her up in Belgrade.

For Ilya, Katarina was a friend.

When we get to Ilya, we have a complex situation. Ilya is who Katarina reach out to in her hour of need, but he also has a relationship to Fakerina. He does not seem to have any real loyalty to Fakerina.
Katarina is "Katarina". He certainly knows Dom, but does not seem to like him too much, but when asked, he betrayed Fakerina. Ilya is a childhood friend of Red, and if that part of Rassvet is true, he is also a childhood friend of Katarina (which does not mean Red and Katarina knew one another as children, but does not preclude it either.)
Katarina. I thought you were dead.
It was myself, Katarina, Dr. Koehler.
https://preview.redd.it/3vp36pq2wj451.png?width=360&format=png&auto=webp&s=8d6748fac8869202fdd31ea9bc6ac09c6a9f3d2e
Katarina calls him, not her mother, or father, according to Rassvet. But when we met him, he does not seem to be that affected by believing Katarina and someone else (Raymond? Masha?) were dead:
YOUG ILYA TO KATARINA: The world thinks you're dead.
ILYA TO SKOVIC: I thought they were dead.
A contrast to Red's suicide speech in Cape May. Red was despondent, Ilya was just working.
It is interesting to note that not once has Ilya referred to Fakerina by name, to her, or to Red:
ILYA ABOUT FAKERINA: Our friend in Paris made a series of payments to him under the alias of Constance Drucker.
ILYA ABOUT FAKERINA: I underestimated her
But unlike Dom, he cries as he remembers the Belgrade incident. His distress seems sincere. Yet he sacrificed Fakerina to comply with Dom's plan to save "his own". What is the relationship to Dom and to Katarina, that Ilya is compelled to do so, even as it causes him pain.
And like Dom, there is one time he uses the full name, and it has a strong whiff of charade:
He leaked that his daughter, that you, were staying at the inn and that you carried sensitive intel. This might be the last chance to catch the infamous Russian traitor Katarina Rostova.

For Red

When it comes to Red, that's when things get much iffier, a step up from even the CIA talking about her.
https://preview.redd.it/ukbwk9hnvj451.png?width=360&format=png&auto=webp&s=c378f91946c5b1277be886925ff57305e3916aea
When Red talks to strangers about "Katarina Rostova" he has no issues. She was a myth, a figment, an illusion.
I may not have told you what you want, but I told you all you need. You'll never find Rostova... She's a figment of the collective imagination... Some people in this world are soul mates. Katarina Rostova and I shared one. Betraying her would be like betraying myself.
He almost always uses always the entire name, as he did during most of the trial:
You know what else is possible? That I was framed by Katarina Rostova
Have you ever heard of Katarina Rostova? ... She was a KGB officer. Would it surprise you to learn that she and I had quite a complicated history? Sex, drugs, rock 'n' roll. Did I say "sex"? Sex.
But not always:
How about that Katarina hid the fact that she was a KGB agent, stole the coordinates for the submarine U.S.S. Gideon, and passed them on to her superiors?
To the people in his inner circle, Dom, Dembe and Ilya, he talks about her as "Katarina" which is normal:
RED TO DEMBE: Not when she mentioned Katarina. Now Elizabeth will stop at nothing.
RED TO DOM: You forgave Katarina..... The last time you saw Katarina was in the rearview mirror.
RED TO DOM: I was just imagining young Katarina covered in glitter.
RED TO ILYA: They're actively looking for Katarina.
As with Kate:
We shared the affection of Katarina.... Katarina was a traitor to two countries, both global superpowers. God willing, Katarina's daughter will live a private life of quiet courage.
But when it comes to Liz, he uses two ways to refer to her, one normal ("your mother")
Your mother was a Russian spy, and now they've made it look like you are, too.
When your mother was pregnant with you, it was terribly inconvenient. The Cold War was ending. Her country was falling apart.
Your mother, despite what he'd done, she wanted him back.
Lizzy, your mother is dead.
Just because he was your mother's husband doesn't make him your father.
Your mother loved that photograph. Represented everything she wanted but couldn't have. Not after she betrayed the KGB.
Your mother can't hurt you.
Your mother was not as bad as I understand why you might think she was, but she wasn't.
You remind me so much of your mother. I don't remember if I've ever told you that before, have I?

and another highly contrived ("Katarina Rostova").
I knew her as Katarina Rostova. One of her many names. She was a KGB agent.
There was a time in my life when I was quite sure I knew exactly what happened to Katarina Rostova.
Katarina Rostova was the cleverest, most resourceful woman I have ever known.
Katarina Rostova was a name that had been lost to history.
Katarina Rostova committed suicide in 1990.
Even saying the name Katarina Rostova has consequences, and now you see. Now you see what that name will make others do.
He has never referred to Katarina, when talking to Liz as just "Katarina", always as "your mother" or "Katarina Rostova."
And that spells that when it comes to Liz's maternal situation there is something hidden. Put it together with the charade and the coyness of the CIA around her, and is clear. The situation is not as simple as Liz's biological mother is Dom's daughter.

FAKERINA

The most intriguing thing Red has said about her is saying she is a ghost with no name:
RED TO THE TASK FORCE: She doesn't have a name. She's a ghost. Think of a name, any name, and that could be it.
And that seem to go with saying that he knew Liz's mother as "Katarina Rostova", one of her many names.
Everyone is more guarded around her. She is "our friend in Paris," "her", or "that woman":
DOM: Tell me what she said. Not your interpretation, her exact words.
RED: I'm not interpreting anything. She's coming for you, and she made it very clear she's closing in.... She knows you tried to kill her, Dom. She wants answers, but she also wants revenge. You set her up, betrayed her
It is interesting to note that not once has Ilya referred to Fakerina by name, to her, or to Red:
ILYA ABOUT FAKERINA: Our friend in Paris made a series of payments to him under the alias of Constance Drucker.
ILYA ABOUT FAKERINA: I underestimated her.
What is very interesting is what happens with Motya Morozov, who obviously knows Fakerina is not the right "Katarina" to bring:
RED: It's about the Townsend Directive. I understand it's been reactivated that you and everyone else who bought in are actively hunting for her.
...
MOTYA: Forget about The Directive. Forget about Katarina Rostova*. I'm not gonna help you find her. I'm gonna hunt her down, and I'm gonna kill her myself.*
and
RED: I guess we know who's third. I instructed you to contact me the instant you had a location on Rostova*.* ... I assume you found the lead on Katarina but, instead of calling me, attempted to bring her in yourself, hoping to relive your glory days and sell her to the highest bidder to keep you rolling in potato vodka and herring for the rest of your life. You're not the first one to underestimate that woman, which is why it was imperative that you call me.
MOTYA: There is silver lining.
RED: I can't imagine.
MOTYA: This one was with Rostova. Sold her information, but he wouldn't tell me what.
so for Motya, "Katarina Rostova" is who he is hunting, and "Rostova" is Fakerina who has information Motya wants to get to "Katarina". Red, like Motya, underestimated Fakerina. For Red "Katarina" is Dom's daughter. Even though he called Fakerina "Katarina" in Paris and when he talks to Patrick Masuda. But she was using the name Constance Drucker.
RED TO PATRICK MASUDA: What I got to do is understand why Katarina Rostova would pay to cure you of a fatal blood disease.
It comes to a boil when Liz point blank asks Red:
LIZ: Can I ask you a question? ... Was the woman from Paris my mother?
RED: A kindly woman comes into your life and takes an interest in you and your child. It's only natural for you to make that wish.
LIZ: Was it her?
RED: I know you don't want it to be true, Elizabeth, but your mother is gone.
What seems to me is that Red does not answer. Not really. Liz is asking a simple, direct question: "Was the woman from Paris my mother?.. Was it her?" The normal simple and direct answer is yes, or no. But that is not what Red answers: "your mother is gone." which is neither here, nor there. He is not denying that this woman is her mother, he is telling her that her mother is gone, and that would be simple for a simple, binary option. For most, the woman who gives birth to a child and raises the child is the mother, and the answer is binary. But if someone has more than one mother, it is not a binary question. One mother may be gone, and the other may have been one that was there. He is clearer the next time he addresses the issue:
RED: ...your desire for the woman in Paris to be your mother blinded you to the fact that she wasn't.
LIZ: It wasn't just my desire.
RED: So she told you she was Katarina?
LIZ: She did. And it's difficult for me to believe she wasn't.
RED: I was convinced my casket was authentic. It was nearly impossible for me to believe it wasn't. But it was a fake. And she was, too.
and we should ALWAYS remember the initial subterfuge when it comes to who Liz's mother started the very first time her name is mentioned.
RED: Mmmh I knew her as Katarina Rostova. One of her many names. She was a KGB agent.
this HAS to mean something, because Red knows Katarina's name, her real last name, because he knows who Dom is, he knows her cover husband, the one nobody talked about, as if he did not exist. But Red does not seem to know Fakerina's real name.
And how does Fakerina refers to Dom's daughter?
On the day you learned Katarina Rostova was still alive.
At least Fakerina believes that Ilya knows Katarina, Dom's daughter, as "Katarina Rostova." Fakerina believes Ilya's real name is Ilya Koslov, and she seems to believe Red is Raymond Reddington.

What is Run-Ahead?
The Run Ahead feature calculates the frames as fast as possible in the background to "rollback" the action as close as possible to the input command requested.
I've enabled run-ahead on most of the 8 & 16-bit consoles and handhelds. A single frame (and using the second instance) is saved here, which dramatically improves input lag without affecting performance on a Pi3B+. More frames would require more hardware power, and may be achievable via overclocking.

What Does This NOT Have?
This doesn't have any ROMs (other than freeware test suites), BIOS files, music, screenshots, metadata, or videos concerning copywritten games. Other than the configurations and overlays, it has nothing that can't be downloaded through the repository or freeware.
Where Can I Get It?
You can download a premade image from Drive:
NOTE: Please expand your file system via Raspi-Config after your first boot, and reboot!

How do I install the Arcade Configuration Pack?
These are the resolution-correct preset arcade configs for MAME/FBA including vertical games. There is roughly 38K files in there, spread out across several systems (arcade, fba, mame-libretro, and neogeo). Having these pre-installed would not allow either image to fit on the SD card used, and may not be needed for everyone. It's a fairly simple process that won't take more than a few minutes of your time.
  • Drop to shell or connect via SSH, and navigate to root (cd /)
  • Download the CRTPi-RCA_ArcadePack.zip with the command:
    sudo wget https://github.com/crtpi/CRTPi-Project/raw/masteCRTPi-RCA_ArcadePack.zip
  • Unzip and overwrite files with the command:
    sudo unzip -o -q CRTPi-RCA_ArcadePack.zip
  • Remove the zip with the command
    sudo rm CRTPi-RCA_ArcadePack.zip
  • Restore read/write access to the files you have overwritten with the command:
    sudo chmod a+rw -R /opt/retropie/configs/
How can I take full advantage of the 480i/240p Switching?
To force 480i for a system or game, you can create a '480i.txt' file inside the configuration folder of the system with a list of the file names (case insensitive, extension optional but recommended) you want to force.
If you wish to force 480i for a whole system, you can write "all" inside the '480i.txt' file.
Alternatively you can create a "240p.txt" file to force 480i to all games except for the ones inside the list.
You can read more about the script functionality here.
Example:
/opt/retropie/configs/psx/480i.txt containing "Bloody Roar 2.PBP" to force 480i for the file "Bloody Roar 2.PBP" /opt/retropie/configs/psx/480i.txt containing "all" to force 480i for all the PlayStation games. /opt/retropie/configs/ports/kodi/480i.txt containing "all" to force 480i on Kodi.
I have X Issue! Help?
I only have like 500mb of free space on my XXgb SD card!
You need to expand your file system via Raspi-Config. Follow these steps.
I want to switch back to lr-mupen64plus!
  • When launching an n64 game, mash buttons on the controller until the runcommand window comes up.
  • Select on "1 Set default emulator for n64" and choose "lr-mupen64plus"
  • Then "Q Exit (without launching)"
  • Launch the game again -- it will launch in the chosen emulator at the proper resolution
What A/V cable should I use for 3.5mm Composite?
I recommend the Zune A/V cable or XBOX 360E cable, you can find them on eBay and Amazon.
Samba Share won't work after I set up Wi-Fi!
Samba share service starts on boot, pending that a network is available. Configure your Wi-Fi then reboot first, and if that doesn't fix it then go into Retropie Setup > Configuration/Tools > Samba > Install Samba. Once it's complete, reboot and it should be golden.
USB-Romservice and/or Retropie-Mount don't work!
Follow this guide, but follow these steps before plugging in your thumb drive:
  • Go to Retropie-Setup
  • Update retropie install script
  • Go to Manage Packages -> Optional Packages
  • Scroll all the way down to usbromservice
  • Uninstall usbromservice
  • Install it again from Binary
  • Once finished, choose Configuration, then Enable USB Romservice
  • Reboot, and wait for it to fully boot in to ES
  • Plug in USB stick (has to be FAT32) and WAIT A LONG TIME (if your stick has a light, wait for it to stop flashing)

CRTPi-480p v3.0X - An unholy bastard for Pi3 && Pi4!

CRTPi Project Presents:

CRTPi-480p v3.0X && v3.4X

A CRTPi image for running 480p via HDMI or VGA!
Other Releases:
Changelog: v3.0X && v3.4X for HDMI&VGA666 05/25/2020
Required Hardware:
What is this?
I finally did something for people who don't want to use expensive video hats and SDTV's! This image boots in your choise of CEA 480p or various 640x480p VGA modes. Using Snap-Shader and Simple-Bilinear-Scanlines, I've given a way to upscale 240p content to 480p, while still looking and performing console-fresh! The perfect image for EDTV, HiScan sets, mulit-scan monitors, GSB arcade boards -- this even works on HDTV's that don't upscale 480p content!!
That said, I hate it and it should burn in hell... Enjoy!
What Does That Look Like?
Here's a bunch of pics I took, some better than others!
What is Different?
See the current changelog and the v3.0 thread for a complete list.
What is Run-Ahead?
The Run Ahead feature calculates the frames as fast as possible in the background to "rollback" the action as close as possible to the input command requested.

To disable runahead for a game (or emulator):
Quick Menu > Latency > Run-Ahead to Reduce Latency > OFF
What is Snap-Shader?
It's a Retroarch GSL shader that ensures games on CRT will look as good as on original hardware. It Makes games crisp vertically, and not shimmer horizontally. It correctly aligns the games for you regardless of console. Virtually eliminates the need for separate configurations per core (console).
https://github.com/ektgit/snap-shader-240p
Snap Shader (especially the snap-basic) is super useful on consoles where you may have a mix of horizontal resolutions within the core that you don't necessarily want to set individual game configs for, which for this build, is basically everything but Megadrive, GBA, GBC, Doom, and Quake.
What Does This NOT Have?
This doesn't have any ROMs (other than freeware test suites), BIOS files, music, screenshots, metadata, or videos concerning copy-written games. Other than the configurations and overlays, it has nothing that can't be downloaded through the repository or freeware.
Where Can I Get It?

Go into the Retroarch menu in game and navigate to "Quick Menu > On-Screen Overlay". Click "Overlay Preset" and choose the VGA version instead of the 480p version -- "crt_gbaplayer..." is for GBA and "crt_supergameboy..." is for GB/GBC.
I have X Issue! Help?
Chrono Cross (or Bloody Roar II) or some other PSX game has weird thick-as-fuck scanlines!
Disable the scanline shader, leaving Snap-Basic in place. Chances are you're playing a 480i game that wasn't intended to have scanlines, and the shader can't clamp to the right frames.
I only have like 500mb of free space on my XXgb SD card!
You need to expand your file system via Raspi-Config. Follow these steps.
GBA, PSX, Neo-Geo, Sega-CD, PCE-CD, etc. games don't work!
I haven't included any bios's that didn't come with the retropie stock image, so you'll need to install the appropriate files in the BIOS folder. For Neo-Geo, I highly recommend the UniBios (renamed to neogeo.zip).

CRTPi-VGA v3.0V - Find that VGA Monitor Yet?!

CRTPi Project Presents:

CRTPi-VGA v3.0V

A CRTPi image for running 240p on VGA CRT monitors
Other Releases:
Changelog: v3.0V for VGA-666 05/12/2020
Changelog: v2.5V for VGA-666 05/05/2020
Changelog: v2.0VX for VGA-666 03/21/2020
Required Hardware:
What is this?
Since I've been relegated to working from home for the next forever, I needed something to pass the time. Lots of users have asked for, and worked with me to create a solution for what we'll call the "Poor Man's BVM." A $5 Gert VGA666 adapter, cheap/free 31khz VGA Monitor, and a Pi packed with roms. What could be a better way to pass the quarantine?
For a long time, there were several stumbling blocks:
I finally stumbled upon some old threads with people listing out some 640x480 hdmi_timings, and that cracked the whole case wide open. I finally had the missing piece that could be slotted into my existing images. The end result is Emulationstation and other non-libretro emulators launching in 640x480p @ 65hz (great for PSP, DOSbox, ScummVM, and Kodi!) and all Retroarch emulators launching in 2048x240p or 1920x240p @ 120hz.
I opted to steer away from Black Frame Insertion and instead change the VSync Swap interval to 2 (running the framerate at half of 120hz). This solves the intermittent flicker and also the reduced gamma from BFI. Overall, it's a much more pleasing experience IMO. You can always change VSync Interval back to 1, and enable BFI in Retroarch if you the other way is better.
I've enabled run-ahead on most of the 8 & 16-bit consoles and handhelds. A single frame (and using the second instance) is saved here, which dramatically improves input lag without affecting performance on a Pi3B+. More frames would require more hardware power, and may be achievable via overclocking.

Snap Shader (especially the snap-basic) is super useful on consoles where you may have a mix of horizontal resolutions within the core that you don't necessarily want to set individual game configs for. This is especially useful in PSX, FDS, PCE/PCE-CD, 32X, and MAME.
So far, the image is only set up for Snap-Basic (Pass: 1, Filter: Nearest, Scale: Don't Care) on lr-PCSX-ReARMed. If you care to, I would definitely try it out on other emulators. Here's the enable process:
  • Quick Menu > Shaders
  • Video Shaders > On
  • Shader Passes > 1
  • Shader #0 > snap-basic.glsl
  • Shader #0 Filter > Nearest
  • Shader #0 Scale > Don't Care
  • Save > Save Core Preset
What Does This NOT Have?
This doesn't have any ROMs (other than freeware test suites), BIOS files, music, screenshots, metadata, or videos concerning copy-written games. Other than the configurations and overlays, it has nothing that can't be downloaded through the repository or freeware.
Where Can I Get It?
You can download a premade image from Google Drive:

Pride flag in my room might raise questions, help!

I put up a non-binary flag on my wall. It's hidden by my door but I'm still worried my parents might see it. So, any good ideas of what I can lie it is? I'm not the best at lying so the only lie i've thought of is:
- "It was an art project at school where we had to create our own flags! I chose my favourite colours and made a flag out of it. It isn't a real flag." (They don't ever contact my teacher)
Not the best, but I can't think of anything else! So again I ask you to help me!
I know the smartest option would be to take it down but it just makes me feel so...euphoric. Like I look up and see it and i'm instantly happy! So please don't suggest taking it down because I probably won't.

How to make a anonymous skin/guy fawkes mask (very long and intimidating post with skin making tips)

How to make a anonymous skin/guy fawkes mask (very long and intimidating post with skin making tips)
So, somebody on my last post asked if they could make an anonymous thingy and I said sure, and I thought I should make a post about how to make the mask! It's kinda* complicated but hopefully I explained it clearly for those who are interested.
*under-exaggeration
1
1) first and foremost, make sure you have allow custom outlines and don't darken outlines on!

2
2) select the 10th ear and make it the color your hoodie will be. i already did black so i'm going to use purple in order to better show the colors, outlines, shading, etc.

3
3) choose the second to last hair, make this your hoodie color as well. also have no front mane.

4) you can go either two ways with this. either:
a) make the markings aka the face white or really any color, and have the outlines be the same as the initial color. additionally for the 1st slot, make the outline the shading color of the hoodie. yknow the dark parts of the mane? yeah that color. *OR*
b) be extra as fuck (like me 😔) and do shading too. use the 7th marking and start with a very saturated color for the 1st slot. 2nd slot should be the same color but less saturated. the rest of the slots should be an off-white color in the hue of the 1st slot.
5
5) use the reindeer muzzle. make the 1st slot colors the mask color and the outlines of the 2nd slot color the mask color. the 2nd slot color should be a darker shade of the mask, imitating a nose

6
6) choose the 7th beard option and make everything the hoodie color. now you notice that i messed up and went ahead but dont worry, i got u fam, ill explain the facial expression in a bit. the 1st slot is the beard/eye/eyebrow color along with the 5th slot. you can lock the outlines too on the 5th slot so the goatee stands out.

WHOA WHOA WHOA! TAKE A MOMENT TO SAVE(ur skin)! okay continue <3

7
7) ahah told you i was gonna explain this. you're going to want your eye color and eye sclera (whites) to be the beard/eye/eyebrow color of the mask. additionally, have the LEFT EYELASH be the EYE COLOR and the RIGHT EYELASH be the MASK color. just stressing that because i, yes the man behind the anon horse, has messed up on that multiple times.

***PLUS, this is the expression you should have!

8
8) honestly, skip this part if you just want the basics down, but for those who want that sexy shading, this is for you. go back to the back mane and choose the 2nd color pattern. have all the slots be the hoodie color, but mess around with the outlines of the 2nd-5th color slots until it blends with the hoodie shading. god that was a mouthful.

9
9) skipping ahead again, i see? ahhah sorry about that. use the 6th head accessory and make that the hoodie color. then use the 2nd color pattern. the 3rd color slot should be the "shading" color of the hoodie, along with the outlines of the 3rd color slot. mess around with the colors a bit by making them more saturated and less value(darker).

10
10) use headphones! really, both headphones will suffice and the color pattern doesnt matter as it will not necessarily show, but i used the headphones with the mic.
then, make the 1st and 4th color slot the hoodie color. make the 2nd and 3rd color slot the shading color.
THEN, make the outlines of 1st and 4th slot the shading color.
T H E N, make the outlines of the 2nd-3rd slot a color that blends with the hoodie shading.

11
11) you're going to use the 2nd glasses(sunglasses) and use the 2nd color pattern. make the rims of the glasses your mask color and the rest your "accent" color aka the eyes/brows/goatee.

12
12) use the hoodie(any color pattern works) and make it... the hoodie color.
YOU'RE DONE!!! after going through the 7 circles of hell, you've finally made it through. i took some artistic liberties and gave my homie pants, shoes, hands, etc. i now realize the pandoras box i've opened, only awaiting the... *sighs* anon-sonas to be made. yes, guys, gals, and non-binary pals, the future is looking very uhm......... interesting. cringe culture is dead anyways so have fun <3.
make sure to save your skin!
SOME HELPFUL TIPS FOR SHADING, COLOR PICKING, N MORE:
  • hue shifting as its called is when you slightly change the color hue depending on how you're going to shade something. its very common in pixel art, but really anything with color in it most likely uses it. this video really helped me out with understanding everything. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNtMAxYaGyg
  • look at pixel art color pallets! the video i linked above explains how to "read" them, so having a reference will come in handy when picking colors.
  • also study color theory! try to get a general idea of what it is and how colors compliment each other
  • know the difference between HSL (hue, saturation, lightness) and HSV(hue, saturation, value). someone on this subreddit made a post entirely on how to do sexy ocd shading, in which i cannot find.... but it was very informative!
  • you can have outlines dark as the night sky, but depending on the design and how it's pulled off, it can look really good! not everything has to be blended in all the way or have sharp outlines. it really all depends on how you pull it off in terms of design and color choices.
  • additionally, EVERYONE HAS THEIR OWN STYLE! some are more similar to others, and really, who cares? some people just feel comfortable with how they make their skins, so let em be. and to those who are working on improving their style, keep up the good work! and to those who really don't care, you can vibe too! and if you like getting rated, thats cool also.
  • this is an example of what the anon skin looks like without my excessive sexy shading ocd
anon: h- stan twitter: *jaw drops to floor, eyes pop out of sockets accompanied by trumpets, heart beats out of chest, awooga awooga sound effect, pulls chain on train whistle that has appeared next to head as steam blows out, slams fists on ta
*dont come for me its just a JOKE
  • h-here's *gags* here's what the skin l-looks like with default colors🤢

  • so i tried to add hair as well and uh... it looks interesting... i guess it could work out if you want it too!

Results of First Official /r/Chihayafuru Survey

On May 3rd, 2020, a survey was conducted on /Chihayafuru. This was the first official survey held in the community, the results of which can be found here.
A total of 173 people responded over the 10 days this survey was open.
Wiki Post with easy navigation
/Chihayafuru's Favourite Shoujo and Josei Anime/Manga
/Chihayafuru's Favourite Anime and Manga (excluding Shoujo and Josei)

Demographics

Age Demographics

Age Range Percentage (Number)
25-34 years old 38.4% (66)
20-24 years old 34.9% (60)
17-19 years old 16.9% (29)
35+ years old 5.8% (10)
12-16 years old 3.5% (6)
Under 12 years old 0.6% (1)
A total of 172 people responded to this question. The results are surprising, to say the least. The median age trends much higher than that of other anime communities with most people being in their 20's and 30's. We have a decent number of teenagers but most people here are adults.

Gender Demographics

Gender Percentage (Number)
Male 56.6% (98)
Female 41% (71)
Prefer not to say 1.2% (2)
Non-binary 0.6% (1)
Agender 0.6% (1)
All survey respondents answered this question. The male majority was expected since reddit is predominantly male. Still, the somewhat balanced demographics are refreshing to see considering most communities are far more skewed towards male (/anime is 85%+ male for instance) although our numbers may be lower.

Country Demographics

Country Percentage (Number)
United States 38.8% (64)
India 6.7% (11)
Philippines 6.1% (10)
United Kingdom 5.5% (9)
Canada 5.5% (9)
Germany 3% (5)
Brazil 3% (5)

Sweden 1.8% (3)
Norway 1.8% (3)
Malaysia 1.8% (3)
Other 21.2% (35)
165 people answered this question. There's an even split between NA and other timezones. Roughly half the community lives in NA while the other half is divided between other regions. A surprising amount of people come from SEA regions.

When did you first get into Chihayafuru?

Answer Percentage (Number)
Between 2013 and 2018 (before Season 3 announcement) 38.2% (66)
Between 2018 and 2019 (before Season 3 aired but after it was announced) 16.8% (29)
Around/before Season 1 started airing in 2011 12.7% (22)
While Season 3 was airing 12.1% (21)
After Season 3 had ended 12.1% (21)
Between 2011 and 2013 (before Season 2 aired) 4.6% (8)
While Season 2 was airing in 2013 3.5% (6)
All survey respondents answered this question. Considering that 72.8% of our users have been watching anime for longer than 5 years, it makes sense that many of them would get into it so early considering its status as a sleeper hit and older fans' willingness to check out less mainstream anime. Many people seem to have picked it up after the Season 3 announcement, likely owing to seasonal culture becoming more widely adopted. Overall, we seem to have quite the mix of veteran and new fans.

Which of these made you watch Chihayafuru?

Answer Number
I watched it without much outside influence 70
Fan response/discussion on /anime or other forums 33
The MyAnimeList score 31
That one ProZD Video 29
Recommendation/Gift from friends/others 25
Anime Youtubers/AniTube in general 12
Ads and Promotions on Streaming Services 7
170 people answered this question. It was the first question where you could write-in an answer. Most write-in answers were grouped together since many people mentioned various blogs/websites which were grouped into "fan response" while people who found it on their own regardless of why they were looking for it were grouped into "watched without much outside influence." As a result, that answer dominates because as Chihayafuru isn't a major topic in other online communities, many people end up discovering it on their own whether they're looking for sports, josei or romance.

How have you watched the Chihayafuru anime?

Answer Percentage (Number)
Illegal streaming/torrenting/sailing the high seas 59% (98)
Legal streaming 55.4% (92)
Physical BDs/DVDs 4.2% (7)
166 people answered this question. More than half have streamed Chihayafuru legally although many of them have pirated it on occasion. Only 7 people own the physical BDs/DVDs.

Which of these translations do you prefer for the Chihayafuru anime?

Answer Percentage (Number)
I don't favour one or the other 50.9% (83)
Official Translation 31.3% (51)
Fan translation by Commie 17.2% (28)
Other 0.6% (1)
163 people answered this question. Aside from people that don't favour either translation, it's strange that so many prefer the official translation when Commie goes above and beyond with typesetting, translating signs and karaoke. Either way, it seems like people have issues with Commie's work or they have not checked it out and prefer the translation on Crunchyroll.

Which season of Chihayafuru is your favourite?

Answer Percentage (Number)
I don't have a favourite 29.1% (50)
Season 3 27.3% (47)
Season 2 22.1% (38)
Season 1 12.2% (21)
My favourite season is still unadapted 9.3% (16)
172 people answered this question. With Chihayafuru being a single narrative that isn't traditionally divided into arcs, it's natural that a large percentage of people don't have a favourite. Season 3 appears to be the most-well liked season and there's yet a considerable number of people that are more interested in unadapted events.

Which Chihayafuru anime OP is your favourite? (Please consider both song and visuals)

Answer Percentage (Number)
YOUTHFUL 45.9% (79)
I don't have a favourite 20.3% (35)
COLORFUL 19.2% (33)
STAR 14.5% (25)
172 people responded to this question. YOUTHFUL seems to be the most beloved OP. It's often considered synonymous with the series and repeated quite often which is common in sports anime. A large number of people don't seem to have a favourite OP while the rest are in much closer contention with each other.

Which Chihayafuru anime ED is your favourite? (Please consider both song and visuals)

Answer Percentage (Number)
I don't have a favourite 33.3% (57)
Hitomebore 31.6% (54)
Soshite Ima 21.1% (36)
Akanezora 14% (24)
171 people responded to this question. People seem to be more indifferent towards Chihayafuru EDs compared to OPs which does make sense because a lot of anime fans do skip EDs. This could be a poll option in the future. Season 3 ED seems to be the most favoured one with Season 1 ED only just behind. No overwhelming majority for any option in this case.

Do you read the Chihayafuru manga? If so, how?

Answer Percentage (Number)
I exclusively read for free on manga aggregate sites/sail the high seas 48.8% (82)
I am an anime-only 31.5% (53)
I buy the volumes legally but read ahead of the official translation via other means 16.7% (28)
I buy the volumes but don't read scanlations 3% (5)
168 people responded to this question. We clearly have more manga readers here than anime-onlies and a considerable number of people seem to buy the volumes even though they read the scanlations.

Have you watched the Chihayafuru live action movies?

Answer Percentage (Number)
No 73.3% (126)
Yes 14.5% (25)
Only some of them 12.2% (21)
172 people answered this question. Quite an overwhelming number of people haven't seen them while a fair few haven't seen all of them. People seem to be largely indifferent about the live-action medium but the movies aren't exactly known for their quality so maybe it's better this way.

Who is your favourite Chihayafuru character?

Answer Percentage (Number)
Mashima Taichi 43.9% (75)
Ayase Chihaya 20.5% (35)
Wataya Arata 11.1% (19)
Wakamiya Shinobu 8.2% (14)
Ooe Kanade 4.7% (8)
Harada Hideo 3.5% (6)
Suo Hisashi 1.8% (3)
Sudo Akito 1.8% (3)
Nishida Yusei 1.2% (2)
Hanano Sumire 1.2% (2)
Yamashiro Rion 1.2% (2)
Sakurazawa Midori 0.6% (1)
Inokuma Haruka 0.6% (1)
Komano Tsutomu 0% (0)
Tsukuba Akihiro 0% (0)
Kinashi Hiro (Retro) 0% (0)
Other 0% (0)
171 people answered this question. Taichi seems to be the favourite for roughly half the subreddit while Chihaya and Arata seem to have a lot of support. For side characters, Shinobu and Harada perform well for their limited screentime. On the bottom, you have the unloved who received 0 votes although one of them really does deserve it.

Do you ship characters in Chihayafuru? If so, which ones?

Answer Percentage (Number)
Chihaya x Taichi 47.4% (82)
Chihaya x Arata 30.1% (52)
Kana x Tsutomu 28.9% (50)
I don't ship characters 22.1% (38)
Chihaya x Taichi x Arata 3.6% (6)
Shinobu x Arata 3% (5)
Chihaya x Shinobu 2.4% (4)
Sumire x Taichi 1.2% (2)
Chihaya x Sudo 1.2% (2)
Taichi x Shinobu 0.6% (1)
Arata x Taichi 0.6% (1)
Shinobu x Suo 0.6% (1)
Sudo x Taichi 0.6% (1)
All survey respondents answered this question. That was an absolutely clusterfuck to figure out with all the weird answers I got. All the Character x Happiness answers were grouped into I don't ship characters and most ships that made sense are listed out here. I expected more people to not ship characters but it seems that the top 3 ships are significantly more popular than staying neutral.

Which medium do you prefer for Chihayafuru?

Answer Percentage (Number)
Anime 81.4% (140)
Manga 18.6% (32)
Live Action 0% (0)
172 respondents answered this question. Anime seems to be the preferred medium for most people. This is by far the most overwhelming majority for any one response throughout the whole survey meaning people are really satisfied with Morio Asaka's work on the Chihayafuru anime. On the other hand, there isn't a single soul that prefers live action despite a considerable amount having seen those films.

Is Chihayafuru your favourite anime/manga?

Answer Percentage (Number)
It's definitely up there 72.3% (125)
Yes, it's the best 16.8% (29)
I've seen better 7.5% (13)
The anime is in my favourites (not the manga) 2.3% (4)
The manga is in my favourites (not the anime) 1.2% (2)
All survey respondents answered this question. Unlike more mainstream anime communities, there isn't an overwhelming number that has Chihayafuru as their favourite anime ever even if the vast majority has it among their favourites. It speaks more to the community's maturity as anime fans rather than a lack of dedication when you consider that Chihayafuru fans are likelier to be willing to try out a more diverse array of shows.

How would you rate Chihayafuru on a 1-5 scale?

Answer Percentage (Number)
5 65.3% (113)
4 33.5% (58)
3 1.2% (2)
2 0% (0)
1 0% (0)
All survey respondents answered this question. Most people seem to have it at a perfect score while a fair few rate the series closer to perfect. Pretty much expected results all around.

How much Chihayafuru merch do you own?

Answer Percentage (Number)
None 80.1% (136)
Physical manga volumes 11.8% (20)
Karuta cards 11.2% (19)
Soundtracks or OP/ED singles 4.7% (8)
BDs/DVDs 4.7% (8)
Storyboards/Lineart/Official Art 0.6% (1)
Other merch 3.6% (7)
170 people answered this question. The lack of availability for merch is quite evident but some people haven't let that stop them.

What are your opinions on the Chihayafuru fanbase?

Answer Percentage (Number)
Minor gripes aside, I love most aspects of the fanbase 49.1% (78)
It has its problems but so does every fanbase 28.9% (49)
I love the fanbase unconditionally 20.1% (32)
The fanbase is worse/more toxic than others 1.9% (3)
159 people answered this question. Most people seem to acknowledge that parts of the fanbase has problems. However, most fanbases do and they're still happy to be a part of it. Some do love it unconditionally and very few seem to think it's overly toxic. Overall, a really mature response.

Other anime and manga

How many total anime have you completed to date?

Answer Percentage (Number)
100-250 30.4% (52)
50-100 25.1% (43)
250-500 17.5% (30)
Less than 50 13.5% (23)
500-1000 7.6% (13)
1000+ 2.9% (5)
I don't know/don't watch anime 2.9% (5)
171 people responded to this question. It's a bit surprising to see that most people's numbers aren't super high considering the relatively high mean age and Chihayafuru's more niche status. Still, give it a year and a lot of these numbers could crank up during the COVID pandemic.

How many total manga have you completed to date?

Answer Percentage (Number)
Less than 50 59.1% (101)
50-100 17.5% (30)
100-250 7% (12)
250-500 7% (12)
I don't know/don't read manga 4.7% (8)
500-1000 2.9% (5)
1000+ 1.8% (3)
171 people answered this question. It's pretty evident that people read manga a lot less than they watch anime here. Still a lot of people that have read a lot despite the nature of a lot of manga to publish for many years.

How long have you been watching anime/reading manga?

Answer Percentage (Number)
10 to 20 years 34.7% (60)
5 to 10 years 31.8% (55)
2 to 4 years 22% (38)
20+ years 6.4% (11)
Only for a year 4% (7)
I only started a few months ago 1.2% (2)
All survey respondents answered this question. Most people are older anime fans despite not having very high numbers as I pointed out earlier. Very few people seem to have started watching recently. It is rather bleak prospects as a lot of newer anime fans seem to be less willing to step outside of their comfort zone and discover shows like Chihayafuru. We can only hope this changes as time passes.

Which of the following are you particular about?

Answer Percentage (Number)
I am willing to watch any anime regardless of age and popularity 79.9% (135)
I do not watch anything from the 90's or earlier 9.5% (16)
I do not watch anime from the 80's or earlier 7.7% (13)
I only watch very recent popular anime 1.2% (2)
I only watch anime seasonally 1.2% (2)
I do not watch anything made before the 2010's 0.6% (1)
169 people answered this question. As overwhelming as the response is for most people being willing to watch anything, it's still strange to see a considerable number still refuse to watch oldeless popular anime despite being fans of a less popular show that will inevitably fall off the radar of newer anime fans. Y'all need some Cardcaptor Sakura, Utena and LoGH in your lives.

Which of these mediums do you actively consume?

Answer Percentage (Number)
Anime 95.9% (164)
Manga 68.4% (117)
Live action TV/Movies 23.4% (40)
Light Novels 21.6% (37)
Visual Novels 14.6% (25)
171 people answered this question. Very high interest rates for anime and manga aside, live action TV and movies are more preferred to LNs and VNs despite both being a part of the animanga-sphere.

Do you consume shoujo and josei media?

Answer Percentage (Number)
I like a lot of shoujo classics 58.1% (97)
I like prominent josei anime 39.5% (66)
Chihayafuru is the only shoujo/josei anime I like 22.2% (37)
167 people answered this question. Over half the respondents love their shoujo classics and a fair few are into josei as well while a lot of them go out of their way to read shoujo and josei manga. Fairly nice results considering the larger anime community's indifference to media that falls under these demographics.

Do you like sports anime/manga other than Chihayafuru?

Answer Percentage (Number)
I only watch sports anime if they look good/are critically acclaimed 40% (68)
I actively consume a lot of sports anime/manga 38.8% (66)
Chihayafuru is the only sports anime/manga I like 12.4% (21)
I only like Haikyu!! and Chihayafuru 8.2% (14)
I only watch anime featuring sports I've played 0.6% (1)
170 people answered this question. Considering that sports anime are largely ignored by the larger anime community and Haikyu!! is often considered the 'exception', it's good to see that mindset isn't incredibly prevalent here (although it could be less prevalent yet). I'd kinda like to poll people on their favourite sports anime and make a recommendation wiki entry on that too at some point.

Which shoujo and josei anime/manga would you recommend to Chihayafuru fans?

We had 59 responses for this question. I have created a shoujo and josei recommendation wiki based on these responses. The cutoff was 2 votes. Some suggested entries that weren't shoujo or josei were excluded from the wiki.

What are your favourite anime and manga aside from Chihayafuru?

We had 117 responses for this question. Similar to the shoujo and josei wiki, I have created a general recommendation wiki for the responses to this question. Unlike the shoujo and josei wiki, the cutoff here was 4 votes to keep the number of entries down.
